The Long Haired Curs

Bubbas, here is two paragraphs from a letter wrote by J. Richard McDuffie in 1995, and a link to the letter in full. You bubbas need to learn something about the long haired Curs. http://www.oldtimefarmshepherd.org/...chard-mcduffie/ "I spent 42 years, 1953 -1995 breeding and reestablishing the Leopard Cur, Leopard Tree Dog or McDuffie Strain Leopard, whichever name you want to call it. They descended from the old time farm dogs (Farm Shepherds or Farm Collies) of the Carolinas. They have the Shepherd mind-set but can cold trail, open on trail and have the staying power demanded of coon, bear and lion dogs.

In more recent years (1980s) there was a resurgence of interest in squirrel hunting. The type of dog needed for hunting squirrels was one that could trail some, but not cold trail and would use eyes and ears to locate squirrels. Terrier types were being promoted as squirrel dogs. I realized that the old time farm dogs of my childhood did a far superior job. As a result I started a nation wide search for the Old Time Treeing Farm Shepherd. I write two monthly columns, McDuffie Strain Leopard and Camus Cur News and Breeding for Results for Full Cry Magazine. I started writing requests monthly in both articles as well as my advertisements asking for anyone who knew of Old Time Treeing Farm Shepherds to contact me."

CC, your right, I did not know that. Now you got me thinking, that might not have been a Border Collie you used. What I do know is that McDuffie had a genuine interest in all types of Curs, and I sense you do also.

CC, a mix of Canadian Cur and Leopard Cur, and a dash of what ever McDuffie saw fit to put in the mix. Your question should have been, What was the Camus Cur? Finding a true Leopard Cur for the cross is very hard to do these days.

Gary Hazel, the only Cherokee Curs that I know of were from Western NC, around the Cherokee, NC area. They were small curs, some of them just Feist size, and had a short coat. I am of the opinion that all of the old true Indian dogs have gone to the happy hunting ground, many years ago. Here is a link you can check out http://www.sqdog.com/forums/index.p...mp;#entry670335 Keep in mind that if a Cherokee Indian has a Cur dog, he can say it's a Cherokee's Cur. Check out the link, but I think they are all long gone from this earth. Now, their was a line of Aussie Shepard known as the Cherokee Line that could work all kinds of stock all day, and hunt all night if you were up to it. The Aussie is just a long haired Cur. Folks of all colors liked them.
