average age for a cur to start???

ive hunted hounds all my life and have started ALOT of them. most of the black dogs ive raised and trained would tree easy coon from the age of 5 months to 10 months. im trying to get into squirrel hunting with curs and most of the cur guys around here seem happy to have curs just getting started at a yr and a half old. they tell me that curs start a little later then hounds. my question is what is the average age that most of you have your pups treeing squirrel??

5 to 6 months. some start later just like with the hounds. I have learned after hunting hounds for 26 yrs that cur dogs tend to be much more accurate and tree game much closer than hounds. this has lots to do with them being tighter with their mouth on coon.

reason why im askin is i have a 6 mth old female ive been taking to the woods alone. she will chase squirrel until they climb but loses interest after they go up the tree. i showed her one coon and she fired up decent but not real good like all my hounds did. i turned it loose and she ran it to the tree and sniffed the tree but wouldnt tree. i sold all my hounds and im only wanting one dog or id have another pup waiting to start if she doesnt turn out. i was done with my hound pups if they was given a good chnce and wasnt treeing an easy coon by 10 months and im not waiting until this female is 2 yrs old because im wanting to tree some game. thats why im askin

average age

I have a keemer now that was treeing at five months. She is a little over seven months now and timbers when they move. The last two I raised were both treeing at six months but I'm lucky I let mine loose till they start treeing. I bought the keemer her owners are getting a divorce. I had nothing to do with her progress. I only hunt mine on squirrels. I have leopards I coon hunt. I like this keemer pup better than anything I've ever had, and I've had a few good ones. I might coon hunt her after this squirrel season. In my experience with the fiest I've had, they start alot later than curs. I gave up on one she was a house dog to, but my son kept letting her walk along. She was almost three when she started treeing. She went on to make a good one. I put her to sleep about a month ago. I had some sad grand kids.

cant make them do what they don't want to do. I do NOT use caged game...period. I have had a few that did not start till around a year old. don't give up to fast, if the pup has it in him he will come around soon enough.

it seems to me that curs start a little earlier then hounds and i agree that most curs are more accurate. my cur was treeing squirrels at 5 months old, in fact i saw him wind a squirrel in a tree and he went to treeing on it. he treed by hisself tonight for the first time at night, he treed up a pine, i never saw a coon but i squalled and saw a limb moveing so i cant say what he was treeing.

It all depends on How much you put into the dog and the blood. Some lines start later than others some start young. Everyone is look for that miricLe pup. JuSt keep it in the woods and leave the cage in the shed. I have started several dogs that people gave up on.
