best deer breaking tactics.....

let me know what the best way is to break a dog from chasing deer? i dont want to hear about a bullet being the best cause that aint an option. i want a fix. where i hunt its not uncommon to see 100 deer in a few hours of shinning if its a good night. so i know i live in deer heaven!

The only way we have done it (and it worked everytime) was to ride around till you see a deer, get dog out of the box put him on the trail and as soon as it barks shock him. This is not the only way just the only way that was used.

You can't break a dog from trash until they are treeing coon real good first .

If you dump the dog on top of deer , the dog is gonna know what you're up to real quick so you need to keep dumping the dog on coon or where there are coon .... if the dog just runs deer when a coon can't be found then you won't have much trouble shocking the dog when you're sure he's on a deer.

If the dog quits coon for deer or leaves coon country to find a deer then you are in for a rough ride .

You gotta find out all this and tell us the situation before anyone can give you an educated suggestion about your problem.

I dont claim to be a great dog trainer and I'm surely not an expert on this but I have in fact broke a dog from running deer. I can say this. Heres what I did. I drove around and found some deer in a field, turned dog loose on deer, when the dog got after them and starts barking I shocked them for it. I had to do this pretty regular for about two solid weeks but finally the dog got the picture and left them alone.

Deer Breaking

The best way to keep a dog from running deer is to hunt them with broke dogs. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Turn them out in good places to strike coon. Lead them to the water, or woods if you have to, rather than send them across a grass field. If you are hunting with more than one dog that runs deer, you will have to split them up. If a dog likes to run and tree, you should be able to break them by using the afore mentioned methods. One thing, be sure and put the shock collar, or dummy collar on the dog several days before you try it. They learn the difference real quick. If you could hunt your dog with a hound that you know is absoloutely broke off deer, you will be ahead of the game. If your dog prefers deer over coon, and some dogs do, you have serious problems.

I agree Craig. I think also that BREEDING for dogs that just naturally dont like to run deer is a GOOD IDEA.

It depends on the severity of the problem. Most dogs can be broke with a shock collar by turning right on one. after a treatment or two and the dog quits running deer, turn a deer runner loose and send the dog being broke with it. If the dog runs bring him back to the truck with the shock collar.

Keep turning them right on top of deer and shocking them back to the truck, then tehy won't run deer or go hunting.

I've heard of a few good young dogs set way back on count of this!!!!!!!Most dogs I've ever had I could plainly tell when they were running deer.Shock em at night while your coon hunting if you must.So what if you bump them on a coon or 2 during there training. If that ruins them. They are not worth there salt to begin with!!!!!!

Deer

I do not like to shock a dog unless I am absoloutley sure what it is running. I have thought that my dog was running deer, and the thought of shocking them strongly crossed my mind, then about that time they threw a locate, and sat down and treed! I think(JMO) that you are better off to know what the dog is running before you " Light up His LIfe."

Deer Glands

We use real deer glands to shock dogs. If we know 110% (like we seen them) chasing a deer then we shock them off of it. Otheriwise we have the shocking tree that they are tied to and shock with the deer glands in their face. It has worked really well. DON'T shock a young dog that hasn't been on a lot of game. We may do things slightly different with big game dogs, but I would rather want them to hunt and go off by themselves and then start correcting what they are running before making them scared to go....

deer breaking made easy

THERE IS NOT A DOG THAT I CANT BREAK,EVEN TAILGATERS.KILL A DEER( IN SEASON)TIE YOUR HOUND REAL CLOSE TO THE DEER,PERFERABLY ON TOP.HOUNDS VERY SELDOM SEE WHAT THEY ARE CHASING.WITH DOG TIED TO DEER,AND SHOCKING COLLAR ON THE DOG.MAKE 3 SESSIONS 30 SECONDS TO 1 MIN. EACH.
AFTER EACH SESSIONS WALK HIM OR HER AROUND FOR A MIN. AND REPEAT AS NECESSARY.WHEN YOU GET DONE YOU CAN USE THEM AS A CHECK DOG.MAY NOT CURE THE OTHER OFF GAME ,BUT I CAN ASSURE YOU THE DEER RACES ARE OVER.

Someone that coonhunts and half-way knows what their dog is doing, should be able to tell if they are running a coon or junk.

I too have used dead deer with success with a notorious deer runner.

I would go deer hunting, bring the deer home and my dog would go ballistic baying that dead deer. Killed three that year , when I drove up with the last one she went in the dog house, wasn't completely broke but well on her way.

My father-in-law had a foxhound that liked to run deer, he poured a bottle of deer scent down his throat...never ran another.

All these tactics were discussing sound great and wonderfull but I fully beleive there are some dogs that are so hardheaded and so determined and so inlove with running deer that they will allways run deer and probably run them even harder the more pain and shocking and torture you put them through.

I figure if they are too hard headed and want to keep chasing deer , try to find someone down south that runs deer with dogs, maybe they would buy it.
