Nance and Finley River both have produced some good cold nosed dogs. You will tend to find more Nance breeding in big game circles.

Bluedog wise I know a strain up north that all go back to the Lee Brother's stock.

i can show you some very cold nosed walkers... as cold nosed as any dogs ive seen. ive struck bear tracks from truck when it was 0 , have seen them run a 2 day old cat track in snow. have tracked wounded bear for people that were also two days old... i agree with jimmy that on the average a blutick or black and tan are coldest nosed .. if my name was walker man id find me a cold nosed walker.. any cat hunter and most bear hunters can probably tell you where to get a cold nosed hound.. if you really want the coldest nose you can get find a serious dry ground lion hunter. most coon hunters dont need a super cold nosed hound... extreme weather is when they shine.. windy, super dry , cold.. on crusty snow. a cold nosed dog will get game when other dogs cant wag their tail.. also there is a difference between a dog that boo hoos around and a real cold trailer.. ive seen dogs could RUN a cold track that average dog didnt know was there... this is something you have to see for yourself. sometimes when game is real plentiful and good conditions a cold nosed dog is a handicap. hot nosed dog wastes no time. shorter runs.. etc. i still like a dog with a lot of noses. i like to hunt on the tough days not make excuses.. pete

I agree with Pete.....

are you looking for a hound that boo hoo's a track all day or one that has the legs along with the nose to move the track?

There are many big game walker breeders that still put some extremely cold nosed hounds on the ground. As for bloodlines if you asked this question 15 years ago I would say Finley River but unfortunately their noses have been breed in lieu of being bench hounds.

Bozo blood, Mundo, Flying Hawk, Clover doubled up, not stylish but Logans or Tonys clover. These hounds have produced cold nosed hounds in modern day walker era.....

House breeding along with Woodscreek and Hurts breeding still produce cold nosed track drivers.

Cold Nosed Dogs

I can give the name of a hard hunting dry lion hunter that says the Redtick he got from me is the best cold nosed dry land track dog he ever saw. I can show you a video of a Redtick that came from my kennel that consistantly takes 12-14 hour bear tracks in Wisconsin and produces the bear and trees bear that other good bear dogs give up on because the track has faded. I can show you coonhounds out of the same line that can consistantly tree coons on frozen ground at zero tempatures that other dogs can't smell, let alone tree. Most of today's competition dogs would starve to death if someone put a blindfold on them and locked them up in a meathouse. Finding a cold nosed strain with the brains to be able to use their nose is hard to do these days. If you are looking for some cold nosed pups, check out todays classified advertising. They don't come any more cold nosed than Pepper and she could run a cold track better than most dogs could run a hot one.

I good friend of mine is a Walker man named Johnny McClanahan, whom knows dogs and I have the utmost respect for, hunted with old Lipper many, many times and said he had one of the best noses he ever saw and would leave most dogs behind on a bad track! Best noses? Overall I would say blue dogs but I really dont think there is a whole lot of difference today.

texhog i had a female out of lipper and cdar hill sass. first season she would cold trail better and strike older tracks thena ten year old dog i was using... a friend had an older dog same cross. same thing... most of the cold nosed walkers ive seen were from lipper or clint breeding . ive seen some nance or marasok bred dogs. not quite as cold nosed. hard to explain in a few words here but they wouldnt take a super old track but could really run a colder track. run it like it was hot.. this kind of dog isnt what you want to run a three day old track but works great when its tough conditions on fairly fresh tracks... . ive bred 4-5 generations. always selecting for cold nosed dogs and im pretty happy with dogs i have now.. as cold nosed as is practical for me... i think they can be found in a lot of bloodlines. i only know for sure the ones ive hunted with. it really is something to see when a good cold nosed dog will run a track that an average dog cant smell ... pete

You will be hard pressed.....

finding a cold nosed hound breed for coonhunting. Stick with your big game hunters you know or have the reputation of re-producing cold nosed hounds.

Pete, Bearhunter, Flying K and others on here all have cold nosed hounds that will flat out drive and old track. Their is also Ron Carpenter out of NC that is breeding a hound called Hardwood Hook. He is re-producing more cold nosed hounds for big game hunters then any hound out there that I know.

I hunt black and tan's,I have a female that carries Comb's & Smith's Smokey top and bottom, she has Bo,and Ead's Riney dog in betwen, she has by far the coldest nose I have ever seen on one of my hounds. The nice thing about her is she has enough brains to use it...
