No breed bashing on this thread, just wondering what got you into the breed you hunt.

I started out with every breed under the sun, and a few that were not under the sun. Stock yard dogs. You know the type: broke, all night tree dogs, not mean or fussy, hunts just right, all for $ 35.00.(Thirty-five dollars.) I could not afford a top hound which was about 2-3 hundred dollars back then . I stayed with the stock yard dogs until I had spent more than enough to buy a good dog. I had walked about 1,000 miles through the rain, cold, heat, and everything in-between, and had not seen a coon.
There were a couple of guys from the Mt., that hunted in the mornings. They invited me to go with them, and man, it was " Katy Bar the Door" after that. They was hunting a young blue male from Kelly Braggs stock that was really doing good. I handled him, and claimed him, but he actually belonged to a vet in Stuart, Va. . After much begging, crying, aggravating, he priced him to me for $ 300.00. You could by an acre of land for that back then, but I went to the bank, borrowed the money, and bought the dog. The first time I took him out he treed a coon. It was in the morning. His name was Edwards' BLue Trouble. I was hooked. As Hank Williams put it, " I got a feeling called the Blues , Oh Lord".......( except my baby did not say good bye..) I've had the Lovesick Blues ever since. That's my story, what's yours.

I hunt blueticks because they seem to have more heart, easier to train and they don't point birds.

I HUNT TREEING WALKERS BECAUSE MY FIRST HOUND WAS A WALKER BUT I THINK BLACK AND TANS ARE JUST AS GOOD AS A WALKER HAVE HAD GOOD LUCK WITH BOTH EVEN THOUGH IVE NEVER OWNED A BLACK AND TAN I HAVE HAD THE CHANCE TO HUNT WITH THEM ALOT IVE NEVER HAD A BLUETICK OR EVEN SEEN ANYONE WHO HAS ONE NOR HAVE I SEEN A RED BONE IN THE WOODS

i started 20 yrs ago with a young smithurst and big wheel bred black dawg he was a good young hound but he tore his pad on his foot really bad and i wanted to hunt so my dad told me trade or sell him so i traded him fer a plott good cat dawg not very interested in coon traded him fer a little ol walker hound she was dynamite hunted her fer a few yrs then got a bluetick female that was just as nice dabbled with the both breeds fer about 14 yrs then got down to no hound well mr bowline called me up and said he had the hound fer me a 4 yr old blackandtan female went and looked at her and thought no way was this fat hound a coondawg man was i wrong you open the dogbox door and she would go and tree coon callled her fat momma sue got aquinted with my huntin partner tim and his blackdawgs and seen some really good hounds work just stayed huntin the blackandtans i like the everything about them voice heart desire to please me and desire to tree coon thier looks are awsome to me so ill just stick with them

I hunt blue dogs , and have for over 45 yrs, those bawl voices and cold nose hounds . I have some english redticks as well hunted them for about 10 yrs. Hunted other breeds over the years walkers, b&t's but give me a bluedog and I am like a pig in sunshine.First dog I ever owned was given to me as a pup when I was 8 yrs old, named her Queen, bluetick/ b&t cross, a dang good coondog the man that gave her to me trained her when she was about a yr old, I hunted Queen until she was 14, she was slow, stove up, , rode in the back of the truck, no box, not tyed, drop the tail gate adn you better have a leash on her. The last night I hunted her, my grand pappy had by, was talking he asked me when I hunted old Queen , I told him she was old and couldn't hunt anymore. He dang near whipped me, sayed hunt the old female, that was what she was trained to do. After thinking about it for a day or 2, me and Queen when hunting, she treed 2 coons , was so tired she could get back in the truck, I had to pick her up, next morning she lay beside the frount door dead, witha smile on her face, buryed her in the back yard under a white oak , I can still go to her grave today. I breed her about 4 times over the years , to nothing but bluedogs sold many a pup for 15-25 dollars, the last dog that had old Queen flowing through its veins died in 1980, have had some fairly good ones since, but none as good as her.

I have owned every breed of coon hound except Plotts. My first good hound was a Bluetick.

I had some good English dogs for a few years, but had bad luck getting one run over and a pup out of her dying mysteriously, and lost that stock. There wasn't any more of it Icould get my hands on. They were Plate Valley and Vanzant's Sam bred. and had good mouths and looked like hounds.

I dabbled with House bred Walkers for a while, and liked them well enough.

Finally I got my old Belle female and and old Natural Blue Meat, a son of Ranger II and Natural Blue Rose, and I never looked back.

I like the strain of Blues I hunt because they have the combination of ability and brains, along with the mouth and looks, that I prefer. They seem to reproduce more consistently than anything else I have tried. I don't have to cull as many of them.

I have also made some great friendships within the breed that are a definite plus.

in High School with some friends that had Hussler bred Blueticks. I've been "dyed in the wool" Blue ever since. Started with Bragg and Vaughn Blues in the late 70's. found them easy to train, effortless to trash break and good speed and treeing ability.. I'll stick with what has worked for me...

I've owned them all but now I pretty much hunt just walkers. I like to keep females and breed them to other peoples studs, there are more walkers out there, so I can usually find exactly what I want without driving across the country. I had redbones one time, but there were only a handful of dogs I would breed to in the country, the traveling get real expensive so that didnt last long.

They seem to be more accurate on average than some of the Walker lines and faster on track than the Blueticks, seem less likely to trash, and treedogs.

Course you get good and bad in all...most time if you get a good one in a certain breed that is what you stick with.

They say the Walkers, English, and Blueticks all originated from the same breed the English Foxhound, the English dogs have had Walker and Bluetick hounds bred into them over the years and allow single registered and English allows more color phases so seems like the English have gotten some good from both the Blue and Walker dogs....I like those three breeds but like I said settled on the English dogs...take care!

richard lawson used to come and get my brother and go coonhunting when i was to little to go.i always wanted to coon hunt and decied to get me a dog about 4 years ago.breed was never a question.it was bluetick from day one.just partial to blueticks.love that bawl mouth.daryl

my dad hide hunted, and he always kept a coondog they all werent pure bred but all i saw was coondog not color....but the first registered hound i ever trained was walker and if it aint broke then why fix it right lol.....they seem to work the best for my style of hunting......but my opinion on all the diffrent breeds is this'''''' IF IT KEEPS YA IN THE WOODS THEN BY ALL MEANS KEEP HUNTING IT''''''''''.

well we havnt been doing this half as long as most of you guys.

but we started when some friends of our fell on hard times, they gave us 2 english and a homemade dogbox for $20. they didnt hunt too well, and we didnt know much bout training them. we traded one of their pups for a walker female. She really got my husband hooked. will tree all night. then our second walker we got for $15 at a benifit auction.AWSOME dog, we have been offerd MUCH more than that for her. and just last week we were given a young walker male, havnt tried him yet. Well we still have the origional english female, she will hunt pretty fair, not a real strong treedog but turned out ok. and one of her pups that is turning out pretty good too. we also have 2 foster hounds, they are a bluetick and a BnT. think the B&T might hunt but the blue was too young when we got her to have been messed with.
we have alot of colors at our kennel but the better ones at this time are the walkers.

my grandpa had every breed but the first dog i paid for was a walker from randy hess and ive liked them ever since

Very interesting. Appreciate you sharing them. Keep them cards, and letters coming!Need to hear from someone that hunts Plotts, or Redbones. I have owned both. My old hunting buddy, Grey Shew hunted red dogs, and he had some good-uns. He is with the Lord now, but man we had some great times. In the early days our dogs were not all that good, but when we did have a good night it made it all worthwhile.

An old man came into my place of work and asked me to find a home for his coon dog. The man explaned that he couldnt walk good enough to hunt him anymore. I took the leopard cur home and hunted him for several years after the whole time trying to train a redbone pup.
After several redbones that were lousy at best I was tired of loosing to walkers. I bought a walker female that was a broke dog and quickly made her a night champion.
I have bred her to elvis and saved two pups out of that litter. I have learned more about what a coon dog pup is suposed to be like from them than all of the other dogs I have owned.
I also bought a 1 year old dog last spring that had never been out of the pen he is now treeing his own coon and split treeing. He will be for sale in the spring.
If I had only known then what I know now I would have gone to walkers along time ago. I just wanted to have something besides a walker because everyone has a good walker.

I started hunting with blueticks made the switch to walkers years ago. I believe the walker breed is years ahead of the rest.

I've hunted walkers, blues and english....i did have a black and tan once but he got stolen. I have now settled on redbones. I like their disposition and when you have pretty good ones, it turns peoples heads......I really like it when other folks whine because they got beat by a redbone. I'll stick with them, but I'm not color blind....a good coon dog is a good coon dog......period....no matter what color it is. but I do like reds and I'm hunting a line now that reproduces and has heart, drive, mouth and accuracy....oh yea.....my wife likes them too.....that helps alot...lol

a redbone pup bought 13 yrs ago i started huntin with my cuz and decided to get me a dog and get me a reddog had reddogs all the way up till couple yrs ago now hunt blue ticks and ive got a waqlker to boot but favorite breed is a reddog thanks

I have both bluetick & walkers, love both breeds, I've had beagles all my life & loved them , the walkers Are just a bigger version & I have always loved the look of the bluetick.
