With all the other things on this board I figured it was about time to get back to hunting...........


I dodged thunder storms last night to get in a little hunt myself.As I loaded the mutts it was thundering & lightening just down the road.So I came in to check the weather bug and see what it was doing where I hunt.The Bug said all was clear so I headed to the farm.

First drop the dogs made a loop around a cornfield with no barks.Second drop I cut them loose and waited a couple mins then drove to the top of a hill so I ocul dhear if they happened to get on the other side..BAD idea on my part.The sorry mutts decided that wasn;t they way they wanted to go and hit the road headed the other way......Finally found them about a mile form where I turned loose.So I just kept driving to give them a little run..I went about a mile further and once they caught up with me I turned and headed the other way.After a short 2 1/2 mile jog I caught they and went to another cornfield This time I think they decided would rather go hunting.They went a short way and struck a hot track and took it about 500 yards and treed.Seeing as how they were close to the road I drove closer.When I got out of the truck all I heard treeing was Boone.He had two kittens up his tree.Maverick opened a time or two further down from Boone and then sat down and treed.He had the sow.

Dennis,

I went last night, I took an older hound and a 10 month old pup.
The pup started things out by starting a track and the older dog, must of came in to her. They ended up treed in a plumb thicket and we could not shine the top of the trees it was so thick.

Chained the hounds and took them and made another dump, and they ran one in the corn, the older hound treed, he treed on a narly old tree with branches and vines everywhere, and we did not find the coon.

Finally, the third time was the charm and chained them again and dumped them one more time. No track running on this one, the old hound treed a lay up and we finally saw a coon. The pup went in a located and was treeing also. This was the first night the pup really treed. All in all, it was a nice time in the woods.

Kate gets her first night back out since the pups tonight. She's fat and out of shape so we'll make it a short one . Weather has been crappy for hunting and the snakes are out looking for water. I just killed a big copperhead about thirty minutes ago in the yard while out back mowing .
Took a pic of it and will get it on here in a bit.

Sounds like Maverick has a mind of his own !!

I had a meeting last night and couldn't go, but I did go yesterday morning early.

It had turned off cool, and we had a rain shower the night before, so it was a nice morning. As it turned out, it was a good thing, because they got after an old big coon that took to a 120 acre milo patch. They ran the hair off themselves for about an houa and a half and finally drove him out of there into a tin horn.

He was madder than a wet setting hen, growling and hissing at them...really had the old pups stirred up.

I'll probably get after them again tonight.

Next week I am going down to Oklahoma for a few days to hunt with some different dogs. While I'm down there I am going to go a little round with Austin Cox and his DUI dog.

I'm also taking a night or two to hunt with my old hunting buddy who is a Walker man. He advertises a dog at stud, too, so he'll probably teach my old potlickers a lesson or two.

THUNDERSTORMS!!!!!!!!!!! man send some up to northern illinois would you please....LOL.... it's so dry up here that the old dogs are having a tough time of it...got a nice pup that is about to turn the corner but alot of times i leave her home, no sence in ruining her in this dry, hot, wheather....RAIN....PLEASE SEND RAIN....

got out tonight and treed a coon first drop started a track ran it got it up on a ol dirt road and lost it second drop my female sky started the track followed by droop and my young 11month old female pearl sky and pearl went about 75 yrds and treed droop tried to move a different track out but went ahead and came on in to the 2 females we squalled a minute and found this little kitten
pearl is really startin to turn the crank im awful proud of her and man she is gonna be loud

each of the last 2 nights. Got a coon treed in about 20 min. both nights & came on home. Absolutely no breeze & so much humidity in the air that it's hazy. Upper 70's & low 80's is a little hard on OLE SQUEAKY & me both. Actually it's the humidity & not the temp, that makes it bad.

Been staying pretty close to the house lately, with the sickness in the family & one death. My brother had a Colon cancer operation 3 weeks ago & just got out of the Hosp. a couple of days ago. One of my brother in laws, had a kidney transplant back in the first April, & he's back in Barnes Hosp. in St. Louis, with a fungus infection in his lungs , do to the medicine that he was on. And a cousin died this past week, of cancer in her liver & pancreas. So it's been a pretty hectic summer around here. My bunch is getting old, I guess.

yesterday was a pretty long day, but I went and made one drop.

Jewel went in and struck, trailed one about a quarter and slammed up treed. Had the meat. Leashed her up, came home.

However, when I got up to go feed about 6:30 this morning, I heard my two five month old pups treeing down on the neighbor's place. Drove down there and they had three up a Cottonwood tree.

That's a nice way to start the morning...

I did not hunt yesterday, I spent the evening Crappie fishing. I had a big bucket full right around dark thirty. Brought them up to the house and cleaned them. I plan on running a hound or two tonight.

I took my 13 month old boone bred female (DoDo) out last night alone. she first struck a track after 20 minutes hunting. she ran track into some small pines and made some really awsome locates. maybe 5 or 6. then back tracked some and then back to same spot with the locates. as it was raining and and the pines were thicker than dogs hair i called her out and headed for another drop. i think she was barking in a hole. probably possum. next drop she races into the creek opens twice and runs out with possum in mouth. dead in about 30 seconds. she's gonna make one fine possum dog.but i hope she'll trash a little on coons. like she did monday night.

We've been hunting at least a couple of nights a week. It's been so hot and humid though that the tracking is awful. It's like there is steam literally rising from the ground. Alot of nights it looks like a full blown fog has set in. It's hard on the dogs and even harder on us!!! I'm not sure whether we're sweating or it's just the air. I guess if we were really sweating that much some weight loss would show up somewhere.
