Coping with the heat

I usually wear a long sleeve 12oz duck carhartt shirt while coon hunting, but it has been just too hot. Friday night while hunting during fog high humidity and extreme temperatures in a low canopy swamp I over heated. By the way dogs were fine, wife claims I take better care of them than I do myself.lol

Anyway, I knew I needed to do something different. So Sunday I went out looking for clothes that would allow me to better manage my body temperature, but also not expose me to all the poison ivy in the woods too. I purchased one of those skin tight under armour t-shirts and a long sleeve poly/cotton blend shirt with holes for air circulation. I still carry water and have gatoraide in the truck, but I will be darn that new hitech stuff does work.

I always wear a heavy "blue jean" shirt and gloves to protect me from plants.
I know what you mean about over heating.
I got a little woozy on one of those 80 degree nights after a walk across a swamp.
It would be great to use something cooler.
Never heard of under armour before but I'll check it out now.

Clorox bleach will kill the Ivy. Wipe down exposed areas and wash off to prevent. Scratch and dab on the bleach if you already have it. Burns like crazy but it will dry it up quick

do you use full strength bleach or diluted? i get poison ivy all the time. has anyone heard of that herb pill or used it, it is supposed to prevent getting poison ivy hives

I have been avoiding the woods this summer because last year, I thought I wasn't going to make it one night when it was hot; because I wear a long sleeve canvas shirt too. I did go saturday morning and was getting warm even when the temp was only 80 to 85 when we got back to the truck. I have thought about Under Armour, but I didn't want to spend the bucks if it didn't work, now I hear it does, I might be able to get some to try. It still seems like a lot of money for a t-shirt though

I heard of folks getting some pretty nasty chemical burns from the Clorox.

I would suggest using a preventative such as Ivy X lotion, or the Oral Ivy drops. I don't get poison ivy, but the folks I work with use this stuff with good results.

Warn,

I am not that far up ... live in Clio & hunt around Ashley. Yep a sucker for punishment for sure ... thinking of hitting one of the nastiest & swampest places in my area tonight. What the heck, golf course hunting is no fun anyway.

Newhunter,

Shhhh! I conned my wife into going to Gander Mountain and buying it for me.lol

Beware bleach today is not chemically the same as bleach 5 years ago. Five years ago bleach was roughly 5% sodium hypochlorite. Today it is called Ultra bleach and it also contans sodium hydroxide. Neither chemical is really good for skin contact.

ISNT SODIUM HYDROXIDE THE CHEM NAME FOR LYE?

As far as the heat you need to take a week off and come down and hunt with me for a few nights. I can take you to some swamps cutovers and hardwood bottoms. we didn't get any rain in june and july has been pretty dry as well. After a few days of hunting you should be able to tolerate your heat up there without any problems.

Bringing this back since it is starting to get warm down here in OK. I just ordered my under armour to see if it is as good as stated. I talked my wife into letting me get it for fathers day. It's only fair since she is going to MI for 3 weeks, and will be gone for fathers day.

got my heat gear from Under Armour yesterday and wore it last night. It seemed to help, although it wasn't warm last night, I still sweated enough to get an idea how it worked.

Thankfully, I dont get poison Ivy. Other than the bugs, summer hunting is pretty enjoyable for me. I worry more about the dogs. Havent had any problems yet, but I keep an eye on them. If I want to hunt more than a couple of drops, I go back home and change dogs.

HEAT AND POISON IVY....

Well, when I went huntin' I wore a cut off shirt to the woods and used bug spray.(To manage bugs and heat) But I wish they would come up with poison ivy repellant.(Too bad they don't) I get it all of the time! I have it right now. All well, I guess that's what I get for wearing a cut off shirt to the woods.

I'm too hard on shirts to be spending too much on them.

I get the light blue poly blend long sleeve work shirts from Wal mart. They keep the poison ivy off and when they get too ripped up, they go into the trash. They've got pockets that are good for a pencil or GPS. I also usually wear some cotton gloves during the summer.

Even then, if I think I got into some poison ivy, I'll wash with Tech-Nu when I get home. The stuff works!

they do sell ivy block

its lotion you put on your skin and it blocks the poison ivy. it works good for me i used to get it every time i went huntin now i just get it every once in a while like in between my finger or somthin cause i forget to put the lotion there. I hate poison ivy its probly the single most thing you could do to me. its worse than being cut open i think.
