We caught one on the ground the first morning after Dan climbed the tree and jumped him out. The second day put one under a boulder under the top rim in the back of a canyon. The Garmin showed that the dogs covered 2.27 miles and an elevation change of approx. 800 feet on the last race.
In my opinion, the is the toughest test that you can put a hound through and you will find out what you are feeding really quick. I hauled two gyps that turned one on May 4th and a littermate male and female that will turn three on July 15th. All of these hounds are full brothers and sisters.
They did an excellent job but I am not sure we could have caught another coon this morning. You could blood trail the dogs from the ledge where they put the last coon.
When we got back to Menard yesterday evening, we carried two of the youngsters to the kennels as their feet were so sore and having to ride in the truck for four hours.
Luckily all these hounds have black feet which is a great trait when hunting rugged, sharp rock terrain. If there had been a hound in the pack with pink feet, I promise that they would not have any pads left.
Adios,
Gary
