No Country For Old Men

I just returned from coon hunting the rugged canyons of the Pecos River when I was reminded why I stopped hunting there over 10 years ago.
This was the most unconventional coon hunt in just north and east of where the movie "No Country for Old Men" was shot. Not only is the country extremely rugged with very few trees, in order to get quality video for the TV show, CARNIVORE we had to hunt in the daylight.
For a report of this hunt go to our Burnham Brothers site on facebook.
Thanks and Adios,
Gary

Partner
We caught one on the ground the first morning after Dan climbed the tree and jumped him out. The second day put one under a boulder under the top rim in the back of a canyon. The Garmin showed that the dogs covered 2.27 miles and an elevation change of approx. 800 feet on the last race.
In my opinion, the is the toughest test that you can put a hound through and you will find out what you are feeding really quick. I hauled two gyps that turned one on May 4th and a littermate male and female that will turn three on July 15th. All of these hounds are full brothers and sisters.
They did an excellent job but I am not sure we could have caught another coon this morning. You could blood trail the dogs from the ledge where they put the last coon.
When we got back to Menard yesterday evening, we carried two of the youngsters to the kennels as their feet were so sore and having to ride in the truck for four hours.
Luckily all these hounds have black feet which is a great trait when hunting rugged, sharp rock terrain. If there had been a hound in the pack with pink feet, I promise that they would not have any pads left.
Adios,
Gary

Three out of four could have gone this morning. Dan sprained his left front ankle and is a little gimpy. The three gyps are ready to fire and will get a chance in the morning but in a kinder environment.
Adios,
Gary

I ended up catching a coon after the dogs worked a cold trail for 3/4 mile. Bad luck set in as we put two coons through the deer proof fence after trailing them a long way.
The most interesting thing that happened was while I was driving to the ranch, I saw what appeared to be a big porqupine in the middle of my lane so I decided to straddle it. Just before making contact, I realized that the blob was two coons that were fighting to the death and both were covered with blood. They completely ignored the speeding truck and I eliminated the big boar that had the smaller one penned against the pavement. There is no telling how long they had been fighting as the Farm Road has no traffic on it. At 5:30 AM, I am sure I was the first vehicle that had been down the road in hours.
Dogs one, pickup one.
Adios,
Gary

P.S. Got back to the house about 9:15 and killed a rattler in the yard.
