Was coming home the other night and big coon crossed the road right in front of me. I have permission to hunt the property and was going to go home and grap the dogs for a quick drop, ended up not doing it but was wondering what anyone else's thoughts are. Is this the same as hunting over a feeder? Would you rather your dog had to work for the track? Just wondering.

i dont get much easyer then that. i have done it and its a good way to get a young dog on a hot track. you can really learn alot about how your dog is doing that way.

My experience with coons crossing the road aint been too easy. I've had dogs run them a couple miles. The worst thing about a coon crossing a road that I cant explain but would like to know is why can the dogs not smell them on certain nights. I have seen some dang nice dogs look stupid on a coon that cross the road and act like it was never there. Sometimes we can get an easy one that way but normally I keep driving.lol

I've saw em turned loose on and not treed more than once. I can count on one hand at the coons I've saw cross in 10 yrs here. Now up yonder. I saw more in one night than I'll see in a life time here and if my ol buddy would of let me. Id have cut loose on 4 or 5 of them

Never been in an area where I had permission to turn loose on a coom crossing the road but I did turn loose on a very large male bobcat on night, just always wanted to run a cat. And run that cat they did. Worst mistake I ever made in the woods. That things like to ran them hounds to death but dang good race and about 20 trees and bailouts.

When I turn out on one I find a place too park downwind and treat it like a normal drop, "when i was young and dumb and full of" My hunting buddy and me would slam on the brakes, jump out of the truck and run and get ol spot out and hurry up and cut loose. Then it usually turned into a cluster whatever, sometimes we would tree and other times spot looked pretty foolish you know "well he never did that before" type of deal.

i have seen some dang good hounds look really stupid doing this, if you give the track about 10 minutes to set in they will tree it.

In my opinion its one of the best ways to train a young dog. I'll drop them on everyone as long as its safe (permission). You dont know what you'll get, coon may go 10 yards to quarter mile.

If I have a young dog in the box I will cut them on one, but it depends on where it crossed, and if I think my dog will benefit from it. Don't want to put the safety of my dog in jeporady, or get on land I don't have permisson to hunt.

ive done it before and sometimes it will make a dog look stupid. when you turn a dog loose on a hot coon like that sometimes they will run it backwards cause the scent is so strong either way they go, but they should get it straighten out unless a coon just walked down the tree and onto the road then the dog might not look so good.lol

If you will wait 10 to 15 minutes before you turn loose on one crossing the road you will have much better results.

Most times I drive by, when I'm just starting a dog I may drop them to get them on a hot coon if the coon cross in a decent spot.
