Went out and played with the Astro 320

The other day, I went to a radio shop and purchased a regular mobile antenna with a gain coil. Put on a SMA male connector and took a drive. Hung up 2 collars. Beautiful clear afternoon. With just the rubber ducky, I got 3.4 miles before loosing signal. Then, hooked up the regular magnet mount that you can purchase with the right connector. Got to 7.4 miles before I lost signal.

Went out to 9.3 and was starting down a slope and stopped to take the picture. I didn't continue on to see if it would pick back up on the other side of the creek bottom.

Nothing special

It happens to be a Larsen NMO150B. It is just a trunk mount antenna in the 155 range. I found the SMA male crimp connectors from ShowMeCables.com for less than 4 bucks a piece (part #1557). Total, I have around 65 bucks in it. I wasn't sure if a gain antenna would make that much difference, but I did get an extra 2 miles over the straight 1/4 wave magnet mount. This was pretty much line of sight.
