Kentucky coonhunters new laws for 2012

On Dec 2nd the Ky dept of Fish and Wildlife voted on 3 new laws that the Kentucky Houndsmen have been working to get passed.

1. Kentucky coon season will now open on Oct 1st 2012 and will continue to run thru the end of Feb. That gives us 5 months of coon season.

2. The law restricting use of a coon squaller while pleasure hunting has been lifted. We can now carry a squaller year around.
Please note that I don't know for sure when this law goes into effect. It might be 1-1-2012, or it may have to be in print in the new Hunting and Trapping guide that usually comes out in July each year. I will update when I know more.

3. Changes have been made to the current bobcat season concerning opening and closing dates and regions that are open to hunting and methods of harvest. I don't have all the details on this other than I believe that you can no longer harvest bobcat during deer gun season.

The Kentucky Houndsmen Assc. didn't have much input on #3. I think that was changed at the request of the Ky trappers, who were opposed to the coon season change. However, I believe it will be a positive thing for the small percentage of those that run their hounds on bobcat.

A big thank you to the wildlife commisioners for passing these laws and to Doug Morgan of the Kentucky Houndsmen Assc for all his time and effort.

On a side note, there are some new things happening with the Kentucky Hounsdmen Assc. We are currently working to get a website started, that will hopefully kick off some time in Jan 2012.
We're looking at possibly adding a new hunt in western Ky.
We have the Houndsmen Banquet currently scheduled for Feb 2012 in Lexington, everyone is invited, memberships will be sold at the door. Last years food was excellant!

We'll have more updates as things come together.

I stated a thread on Ky hunting forum,,Most folks were in favor of the year round coon season.
Myself would like to see a summer season on coon like they have now on squirrels.Maybe June 15 to Aug 1st or 15th
This would do 3 things, Help folks keeping coons out of there gardens,,help people that have leases take a few coon off there lease before deer season, and for those who likes to eat young frying coons ,,this will give them a chance to put some fryers (legally) in the deep freeze I beleive this would help coonhunters ,get a better reputation..these folks would be looking for people with dogs to help them in the summer on saving there gardens and cleaning up there deer hunting spots.

Thanks for the input Doug.Kycooner1,most of the folks that were in favor of year round season were mostly the selfish, greedy deer hunters only, who constantly complain about coon eating their corn piles.Several of them stated they didnt care if we killed them all,so I think their opinion of coonhunting shouldnt amount to a hill of beans, they dont like us and they dont want our hounds on their precious 10 acre plots of land.I do however think your idea of a summer coon season is a great idea.

Personally I wish they would end the season at the end of January and actually enforce a ban on training or hunting from February until May or June. Locally our coon population sucks because people hunt year round and shoot out everything they tree. Hunters that hardly ever hunt during winter get out in the spring when the weather breaks and kill a lot of coons including the bred sows.

Virgil your right in a way.People out to the west from us dont understand our coon population isnt the greatest but it isnt that bad either, just alot of walking your butt off hunting. Now enforcing a ban from Feb to may or June on training and then start hunting in 100 degree dry weather, especially in your country just doesnt make no sence to me,sorry!I know where your coming from but thats a good time of the year to hunt young dogs, now people killing coons to their old dogs around that time, well you cant fix stupid.

Whordel,

You would have May and June to hunt before the weather gets real hot. May and June in KY are full of high 50's and low 60 degree nights just right for hunting. July and August you have to hunt around the creeks and rivers to get coons anyway so it wouldn't be that bad on the dogs as they will have water close by.

I just can't stand people who lay in the house all winter bragging on their dog but are afraid to hunt in the cold weather but as soon as spring starts to show up they are out in the woods every night killing sows with kittens. When season goes out my dogs get a break until late May at the earliest. This year they were mid June because the sows seemed to have gotten bred late as there were no kittens on my trail cams until then.

I understand what you are saying.Im going to hunt my pup this winter hard.Worst time of the year to hunt a pup but I believe this winter will give me an idea of what kind of potential he really does have, not laying mine up for nothing.

COON SEASON

I BELIEVE WE DON'T NEED TO TAKE COON PAST THE MONTH OF APRIL BECAUSE THE SOWS ARE GETTING READY TO HAVE THE KITTENS,MABY REOPEN IN OCTOBER.THIS SHOULD HELP WITH THE POPULATION ON BOTH ENDS.IN OUR AREA WE DO HAVE A GOOD POPULATION BUT WE ARE NOT OVERSTOCKED BY ANY MEANS...JMO

guys i got to scratch my head when you start talkin about season open year round or having an open season in summer in kentucky. even opening early in october. boy our score cards are really filled up with big scores right now. if we had a open season year round you think its hard to get a big score now, it would really be a mess then.

even october that they just past. october is the month that if you got a good dog you can slaught coons !! instead of poping one here & there it will devistate or coon population.

almost everybody i know carries a gun year round in their box & use it on ocassion. we get a open season in the summer it wont be an ocassional coon poped out.

i understand what your saying but we aint indiana or ohio with our coon population !! if our season was extended i can garrentee you one thing i'l be packin a gun every night & so will everybody else !!

off season catch me killin a coon once in a while i'l be glad to pay my fine. open season more months i aint got nothin to slow me down killin coons & nether does anybody else !!

we been lucky & got zone hunt the last 2 years. we have a open season in summer we can kiss them kinda hunts good by !!

Rough Creek, you hit it right on the nose. I've had dozens of pups that have never seen a coon run and tree. We have several up here that brag about killing and trapping over 100 coon a year but don't understand why they can't score on one in a hunt. I wish i would've known about this legislation.(my fault) In my opinion, season should open Nov. 1 and close by Jan 1 and allow the rut to happen without killing them all.

Cause it the deer hardcore deerhunters thats pushing it.A month earlier isnt going to hurt us but I have had deer hunters call me wanting to thin some coon down during the summer months cause they didnt want me on their land during deer season, thats why I wouldnt see a problem with a 3 week season in the summer, just save me from getting caught.I dont support a year round season whatsoever but the same people are going to knocke em out regardless.

This right here is the problem. Some hunters aren't smart enough to manage the population and all they know is to kill every coon they tree. I'm covered up with those type people around here and it has destroyed our population.

How many have permission on farms with these instuctions " Kill evrything you tree ,,if I hear your not killing them, you won't be coming back".

I personally don't kill many coon in some of my places ,,but i feel a summer season would put you in new spots ,that you wouldn't be able to hunt anyway.

The farmers and the Deer hunters are wanting them classified nuisance animals the same as coyote and crows open 365 days a year.
