!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 2 year old that when he's on, he's tough. His problem is he messes with squirrells if there are no coon tracks. How do you go about breaking him off squirrells? I have given him some lessons during the day but at night he still messes with them. Thanks in advance.

Man that would be a tough one. It would be hard to know what he was doing if he winds any at all. That is why mine arent allowed to mess with squirles, cats or anything else from day one.
I have pecan trees in the yard that I keep them in. So breaking them off squirles is easy. The neighbors has a cat so that is a no no from day one. It would be tough if you werent set up for it though.
The down side to this place though is I can't do drags and things with out takeing them out to the country.

Okie dog, I thought I had him broke during the day that is why I took him out last week.
Dave, when I follow behind him at night and look at where he is bogging down on tracks and where he is wanting to tree it is usually on deadfalls and stuff like that where squirrells like to mess around. Then when he trees it is always slick when he is on one of those tracks. When I had laid a drag in the daytime and hung it up in the tree he went right after it so I thought I had him figured out. What else do you think it might be?
JCuller, I'm not trying to be smart by no means but what does a non moon lit night do? Every time he trees and there is a coon in the tree, I do shoot it out.
Keep em comin guys, I am baffled. LOL.........

Squirrels feed at night when the moon is bright, not just during the day. Which is why one treeing squirrels trees more on bright night, and is coon only on dark nights ! The bad ones are those that cold trail flying squirrels as they seem to be out light or dark ...

We'll go old school. Get a fresh dead squirrel. Cut the tail off. Wrap the body with electric- fence wire. Wrap it close together. 1/4" between wraps . Hang it off an electric fence from the wire you wrapped around the squirrel. Like a xmas ornament. Wet the ground around the squirrel. You want to make a good contact. Now test it. You know what I mean..
Cut the dog into it. Use the wind to your advatage. He'll smell it. Don't say nothing. When his nose hits the electric wire on the squirrels body and lites him up. Problem should be solved. A dogs most sensitive part is the nose. I know somebody who leaves a deer leg wrapped up all the time. Pups learn early on that a deer is no good.
Good luck.
Scott

Thanks Scott. Right now he has a small stuffed animal that I cut open on both ends and pulled the stuffing out of and ran a collar through it soaked with squirrell scent around his neck. When I fed him tonight I took that collar off so I could refresh it and boy oh boy when I went to put it back on him he didn't want no part of me. LMAO....... I won though and he has it on again. Talk about old school Scott, how bout that one too. If he wasn't such a nice dog when he is right this would have been over with 2 months ago.

matt, i think he is just having problems on old feeder tracks. a coon thats out late afternoon and not being harassed will climb on tree tops and dead falls just like a squirrel. if he was actually treeing tree rats, you would be walking to alot of trees with squirrel holes. but then i seen a coon come out of a squirrel hole one night, so it kind a changed my way of think'in too.

Yea, I know what you mean Dave. He has really got me baffled. I wish I had access to about 10 cage coon right now. His other problem is that it doesn't matter if you have 1 or 10 other dogs out with him, he pays no attention to them what so ever. Would make one heck of a competition dog if he gets this straightened out. If the weather cooperates, I will give you a call and we'll go out and then you can listen to him and maybe you can give me some helpful tips. Thanks.
