Sick coon with Black tongue

My dog caught and killed one last night. The coon had a black tongue that looked rotten. Also was missing some hair on its belly. Was worried about disease for the dog, as he was chewing on it till we got there.

Does the creek or river you are hunting have a bunch of leaves in it? Does the water look black?

The leaves stain the water, and then when the animals drink it, the water stains their tongues. Nothing at all to worry about.

perhaps you could contact the division of wild life in your area and report it so they too can keep an eye on this. Hope everything is happy and safe. Sandi
