Our male lays up for 6-9 mos. without being hunted and trees coon like he had been hunted every night. In fact, when he finished to NTCH he had gone 6 mos., 2 mos., and 3 mos. in between wins, not from losing, but that is the only time he got to the woods and he didn't finish with low scores either. Every once in a GREAT while he will pop up a possum, no porky's, no deer, no fox, nothing. He is 9 yrs. old and can hold his own against a young dog yet.

My female on the other hand needed to be hunted hard and often to stay in coon minded condition. She is 11 yrs. old now and I let her hunt anyway she wants to now, I feel she earned the right to tree a possum now and then and she has never learned in all her yrs. that skunks just don't play nice. Porky's she got into 2 times and leaves the rest alone.

At 5 yrs. old I think he will be just fine. If he was mine I would just hunt him whenever I could and just enjoy.
