The moon (MAYBE)

Never put much store in all the stories about the moon effecting how coon move cause iv had some good hunts on moonlit nights BUT after last night its my only excuse. Hunted my best hound to show her to a friend that hadnt seen her go so i guess that was the double wammy and boy did she look like an IDIOT.
In the last two weeks since season opened this dog has made 19 trees and had a coon on the outside 18 times. Hunted her 5 hours last night and she made 4 slicks 2 dens 1 hole in the ground and then to top off the night she ran a coon down a hedge row that we saw climb and couldnt locate, it was so brght that if shed have been smart enough to look up she would have seen it.

So i guess the moon is my new number one excuse.

Thanks for listening i thought telling the story would make me feel better. It didnt

a female that I usually NEVER have a problem getting a coon with, has ran porcupines the past two nights in a row with this moon!

Anyone that says a full bright moon doesn't affect coon movement haven't hunted enough or are just not being truthful.

John

Hunted last nite also with Bluspeck. We got out early right after dark and hunted almost two hours didnt run a track but located and treed on a big den where he smelled coon. It was dry and still and just awesome to be in woods but the locals say the coon are moving best after 1 AM for some reason. We have been in the same spot a couple times last week and no trouble treein coon. Nothin moving early last nite. Hey they are dogs and all of us have a bad nite John! Go gettum the end of week cold spell comin in Friday!

you said a mouth full!! sure you can tree coon, but they don't like to run in the open ground. they stick to heavy cover like dense timber or standing corn. if they don't have that, they wont travel far from there den. we caught two on the ground and treed one last night.

I have treed coons on bright nights but I have also seen dogs do some of the stupidest things ever on bright nights. More often than not!
I have never had a whole lot of luck on bright nights but will still hunt. Not one of my most favorite times to be hunting that is for sure!

My Take

has always been, they see better to prey on food, so they also know they become easier prey and are on a more hightened alert in bright moon conditions....

When you factor in the moon, you can't think about what happened over the course of just a few hunts. You have to factor in many, many hunts sometimes over the course of a career of coonhunting to get an accurate example of what bright nights cause.
You may go on a bright night and have the best night you ever had, but if you take a "career" of hunting and factor in all the bright nights that you went, I think a person would get a very different picture.
