i have a 1 old redbone that is very lightly started he knows wat a coon is and will stike a track on his own without other dogs but wont tree yet... how can i get my hound to start treeing without using older dogs??????

you may have to put him with a good tree dog and knock a few out to him but you cant make a dog tree they either got it or they dont jmo

he will tree a drag tho could it be he just needs hunted alot more

It helps a lot to have them knocked down to them, our dogs were trained to tree squirrels they watched them run around the trees, got very tree minded then just switched over to treeing coon in the spring. Not saying to train on squirrels just saying it might help if he a saw a coon go up or had one come down on him to get "tree minded." Its a lot to figure out, it will happen. Good luck

yea that might help but if he trees a drag he should tree if he gets a hot 1 up a tree me ,tself wouldnt fool with a drag on a pup thats 1 yr old i would try him a few times with a good strait dog thats trees good and not ill not tryimg to discourage you but some make it some dont best of luck with him

Give him time. The difference in my redbone from12 months to 16 months is incredible

I have a 10 month old walker female that was doing the same thing till I tied her back n didn't pet her up or let her have the Coon a few times now she's up on the wood and coming along ........now with some luck she'll keep improving

Without using older dogs be prepared to take a little longer. But not a whole lot longer. It's been a long time since I tried doing it the hard way. Jacklight a coon or two and she if she cam smell it up the tree and get excited . Probably not because a jacklighted con might have benn up there all day. Put your foot on the end of the leash and hit the first one in the head so it is just wiggling. If she like that hang it up way out of reach and give her a few minutes to see how she likes it. Either way tote it out and make over it some. Don't do that to the point where she thinks she can just tag along and have coons dropped for her but she needs a taste. If she likes it , heartshoot one that can give some trouble when it hits the ground. Don't worry about a coon fight ruining a pup a pup that gets setback by that is noaccount anyway. Better to find out sooner than later. I mean setback for a week or two but no longer. Just as easy that scuffle will turn her on. Then its time to tie her back when she is turned on and don't give it to her. That's where it sounds like you are now. Then it is just boot leather and lonely nights till you get fast enough to get to her before she leaves. The first one she trees if it only takes you thirty seconds to get to her has got to come out.
When I started hunting the old Walkers were not tree happy and I was prepared to give a pup to a year and a half old before I expected them to tree. However I expected them to start running by six months and be pretty daggum good at it way before a year old. I had some capable and honest dogs doing it that way. I wouldn't want to ever have to do it that way again though. A good hound to train withputs an end to all those lonely nights. JMO.

Some pups start by trailing 1st and some start by treeing 1st. Just because he's not treeing for you yet does'nt mean that he will never be a tree dog. That can flip on like a switch all of a sudden. I've had it happen before and they made Nice Treedogs.
It is definetaly easier to start young dogs with a good tree dog thats straight on coon. I just tie up the young dog by the older dogs tree and shoot the coon out and let the older dog chew on it, but not the younger one. Then take the coon and throw it up in the crotch of a tree where the pup cant reach it and let'em hammer on the tree for a while and praise them for it. They only get praised on the tree.
If you dont have a older dog to train with I'd take a cage coon and cut it loose right at the base of a tree and let your dog watch it go up. Praise'em up if they get up on the wood and start treeing when you let them loose. Tie them back again and shoot it down in front of them and tease them with it a bit and throw it up in a crotch of a tree. Let'em tree on it for a while. Also most times I will not let a young dog even chew on the coon unless they deserve it for doing a good job.
It just sounds to me that your dog has'nt figured out that the coon its trailing go up trees yet. Also when you are hunting him try and stay close so if it even sounds like your dogs tapping a tree you can get 'em handled up quick and get em on the tree they hit and get em fired up. This is just some things that have worked for me. Hope it helps.

thanks for the advice WattsFlatsRedbo.. see this red dog i got he will tree a drag but he likes to circle the tree he dont actually get up on the tree to much and he will chop at it for maybe a min or two then run track back for bout 5 yards and then turns around and comes back to the tree then chops again...
