new to training

I have a 9-10 month old walker female she goes crazy over a cage Coon but once I let the coon out and it gets close to the wood and a cut her she stops barking and will run the track good n smell up the right tree but never make a sound after i cut her. I've tryed hanging a trap up with a Coon in it and tryed hanging a dead Coon up but she just trust to run up the tree instead of barking. I dont want to ruin her with to many cage Coon but would like to see her treeing good before sending her off at night. Any advice on wut to try next would be greatly appropriated

Most dogs don't jump and bark. They do one or the other. Sounds like you're training her to jump> Never hang a coon so low she thinks she even has a chance of getting to it. I seldom hang a shot out coon to a pup for that reason. Alot of folks hang a shot out coon in a fork they can reach. I look for a two or three inch sapling I can bend over and fasten the coon in and stand it back up. I might only do that once when a pup comes in to a tree the old dogs treed. If you hunt her without a trainer, don't be tempted to shoot out a coon you might happen to jacklight that she does not deserve. Day training could involve more drags, to heck with the tree, that is the simplest part. A dog has to learn how to trail them before they can tree them and get it right. If you are wanting to see her treeing good before you send her off at night I don't know what to tell you. Do you expect to send her off at night and she just go to treeing on something? I don't mind a pup going off at night, because that is necessary, and trail to the tree and not know what to do for several months before it trees. And believe me, that first coon she trees is coming out if it is in the game commissioners front yard on the 4th of July. But everybody has their way of doing things.

Thank you for thanking me. Most on here think a silent night go yonder that picks a big tree is the thing to have. So don't credit me telling you about a 2 inch sapling that I use . Train her to find a great big old leafy tree that just "might " contain a hollow. LOL and and LOl and LMBOLOF.

That is a good idea. A rollcage coon 1 time, a hang up dead one 1 time and a hot bucket coon 1 time. That's it. No more, and let her get herself in the dark by herself. Now I have done it that way and it can be done that way and possibly have a great dog by doing it that way. But once you get her trained don't let her get senile before you start another pup with her. If she is straight and honest , there is no better way to start a pup. Don't even wait till she starts going down to do it. You don't want a pup ploding around after a slow dog. Within a month or two a pup can keep up with the fastest greaaat grand thing there is.

Hunt that dog

You won't make a coondog in the daylight. She knows what a coon is so start hunting her at dark. The caged coon thing is way overrated and no kind a gauge for what kind of track or tree dog your pup will be. If she has any kind of TREE BlOOd at all, she'll make some kind of treedog. It may not happen immediately, but it's not supposed to. HUNT THE BEST AREAS YOU CAN. DON'T HUNT HER WITH ANYTHING THAT RUNS TRASH. DON'T SICK HER ON TREES. If you don't have anything decent to hunt her with, hunt her by herself. Charge that light and cut her loose where you know there are some coons. You'll be proud when she gets struck, comes treed, and them eyes are glowing.

The best advice i can give a new hunter is to not start out with a pup tryig to be a trainer. But since most newbies start out with a pup anyway the second best advice i can give is to not get caught up thinking their is a right or wrong way to start a pup because they are all different in what it takes to let them know what we are doing out there walking around in the dark. At about 6 months i usually drag a caged coon through the yard where the pup can see it and watch to see if the pup is inteested enough or mature enough to act aggressive towards it. Beyond that simple start its all a matter of figuring out what that indivdual needs to move to the next level. Sounds from your original post as if your dog is ready to be taken to the woods at night where you can hopefully find an easy coon to get to the next level. Good luck.
