Not to many out there do know. That's where pleasure hunting comes in to learn your dog. But people know what their dog is doing but just don't want to admit it.

i know quite a bit of the time, but i can't say i'm always happy with what they do.

as a percentage of all hunters i've hunted with, i'd guess about 60-70% know, about 20-30% admit it if it's bad.

I would say a high percentage but then again everyone I hunt with has hunted at least 40 years so they are pretty knowledgeable and not too proud to admit when one of their dogs does something wrong.

most young hunters today wait for the garmin to tell them what their dog is doing. i hunted when we did not use trackers at all. so we had to know what our dogs were doing and what they were not doing. i like the trackers and the garmin, i use them. but i only pull them out to find a dog. not to try to figure out where it went or how many circles it made. put those things away and really learn what your dog is doing but what its telling you.

Spend some time in the woods with your dog and knowing what its doing usually isn't rocket science...they might throw a curve ball once in a blue moon with somethin off the wall...but for the most part, you aughta know...like was said, the real question is how many guys are honest about it? Lol. Heck, some guys lie to themselves just to think their dog is worth feeding...

I used to run a dog that would bark at rabbits...slighlty different bark than his normal coon track bark...he's a farm dog and runs loose..trailing rabbits around the farm is how he learned to run a track...I don't fault him for it...he wouldn't run rabbits in the dark but he'd open on them...we hunt thick coon so it was never long till he struck a coon...only ever had 1 judge think he caught him running rabbits...buddy was hunting him that nite.."that dog run rabbits?" Buddy had a smart answer..something like "no he's a walker coon hound not a beagle". Buddy mah have struck him on a rabbit bark..judge moved in hell bent trying to prove it...and he fell treed with a coon lol...but I learned his rabbit bark after hunting with him a bunch..

Heck I can tell when the woods gets thick when I hunted that male...he was a big ole boy and a sissy..hated thorns and slashings and thick stuff...he'd get through but he'd boohoo the entire time...that always made me laugh cause I boohooed into many trees just like he did gettin in there lol!

most know when they are treed but thats about it... they don't know what went on till they got there nor half the time whats going on at the tree imo... I hit a few hunts and it amazes me what people think went on

Well, I'm not the dog and I'm not GOD so I have no idea what all goes on out there in the dark. I bet a gracious plenty though.

I have a three year old walker female and I trained her from our own litter of pups at six weeks old to three months I ran her on a coon hide and from there we caught coons and then she started treeing her own coon!! two years ago we didn't have a tracking collar and I hunted my dog a whole summer without a tracking collar and I can tell by her voice what she is doing and how fast she can tree! I also can tell that when she opens on a trail if it is a cold trail or if its a hot trail! I love hunting my dog because we have such a bond with each other that if I go out to the kennel and take another dog hunting she will bark her head off and sometimes if I don't hunt her enough she will act all depressed and mope around beacuse I didn't hunt her. My dad has been a pleasure hunter all his life and I can describe all of the dogs barks on trail to when they tree!! And I also know when our dogs hit trash because I have a walker that is 1 year old and he will tree coons and porkeys! I can tell by his voice wether or not he's messing with a porcukpine or treeing a coon!!!

i know 90% of what my dogs doing once he starts a track i know if its hot or cold if hes gonna finish it or if im gonna have to pull him off it i know when he comes treed if hes empty, possum, or a coon....if you have a consistent hound and you spend many nights with them in the timber you learn to know what your dog is doing...now on the other hand i have a dog that is not consistent and i have spent many nights in the woods with her and i can say i only know about 50% of what shes doing

My God People theirs a Thing Called "DayLight" and Coon Do and Will have movement during the Day ..

I have Treed Coon at 1:00 pm on a 98^ day, He was feeding along the strech of the river with lots of overhaning brush and shallow water with Alot of CrawDads ..

Mornings can be productive exp. after if their have been High Winds and or Thunder Stroms during the Night .. Their out their Feeding !!

During the Light you Can Watch just how your hound is Working .. If you think your hound is passing up Good areas then Call them back to the Area and Show then what to check, Logs entering the creeks that coon will walk down to go fishing . Tracks in the Mud Ect.

They will learn to settle down and Hunt the area right ..

heh heh heh... I feel like a lot of people do this, and then tell me I'm being too hard on my dog because I DO know what she's doing, and a lot of the time it's trying my patience...

I don’t know what the percentage is but lots of people don’t really have a clue what a dog is doing simply because they don’t pay attention. Or they think they know and won’t admit to themselves when they are wrong. I can tell you this; if you take a man and his dog that normally hunt in thick coon and put them in thin coon you’ll most likely hear “man I never seen him do that before I don’t know what he’s doing” that’s because in thick coon a dog can cover mistakes by getting treed with a coon. But in thin coon if he opens that mouth and can’t find a coon he won’t look so good. This happens all the time and most people don’t have a clue what’s going on.

it's simple for me. i go coon hunting but my dogs go fox, possum, and rabbit hunting. sometimes they tree and it takes me a moment to realize that they are treeing.
