Coonhound paralysis???????? Or coonhound syndrome??

Has anyone ever had there dog get this? If so how did they recover? We have a male that the vet thinks he has this! It started about Tuesday when he lost his voice completely and although I was boggled I didn't think much of it I just started giving him honey and mustard! Well last night I came home and the To my surprise he couldn't barely walk he would stagger like 10 feet and then fall right on his face! Me and partner flipped out and rushed him to the emergency vet where they said there pretty sure he has coonhound syndrome! We are going to pick him up today and bring him home there is no treatment for this you just have to let it run it's course, they say most dogs make a full recovery but in severe cases it can get such bad paralysis they can't breath on there own and will die without a breathing machine! So I was just wondering of anyone else has ever had a dog get this and if so how did It turn out for them? Thanks for reading Eric

First, make sure that they test for Blastomycosis and Lymes Disease. The symptoms are all the same. These are the first 2 that you should consider. If they rule these out then you might have coonhound paralysis. Both of them can be treated although the treatment for Blasto is expensive. Some dogs get over coonhound paralysis and some don't. They require a lot of hands on care and support.

We just got home with him from the vet he can't walk at all now and can barely lift his head up to eat and drink! The good news is that he still has a good appetite and wants to eat! The vet says that he could be like this for 3 weeks to 4 months he may get worse or this may be the worse he gets it's all unknown! If anyone else has had experience with this any info would help we have a long road ahead of us I know and I just wanna do whatever I can to make it easier on him! Thanks Eric

I had a female that had coonhound paralysis, took between two and three months for her to recover.I built a large box, around 4 footsquare and a good three feet deep, filled it with good soft prairie hay. This was to keep her from getting sores as the only thing she could move was her head. This was in the winter time and she would only go to the bathroom at one certain spot in the backyard so every day i had to carry her outside to her spot.I was lucky and was within a 3 hour drive to the Iowa State vet school and they diagnosed her.Dont know your vet but i have never heard of coonhound syndrome, maybe the same thing but if they havnt done the tests the other gentleman mentioned and arent furnishing some form of treatment i would surely find another vet and get a second opinion.

Lord,O Lord; I wish that somone could give her hope! I had one that had it and it will more than likely yours won't be much diffentl It completely parelizes to the point that you have to pick his head and lay it in a pan of food and the same with water. I'm all ways scared that it could happen again. It comes from I guess the saliva of the infected coon. I remembered a few nights before he had spit and we shot the coon out and really got his old butt whipped. I really hope your dog gets better but, who know's!!

I have a buddy that has had a few dogs come down with this... Bad stuff. Killed one of the dogs, one came out of it and he retired it and the other made a full recovery. Main thing to do is keep them hydrated. Give them some gaterade once a day. The dog will get to a point where it cant move and you will have to feed it and water it by hand. Other then that not much you can do, let it run its course and hope for the best. Biggest thing to remember is that some dogs are more respetive to it then others. Once a dog gets it. it is more likely to get it again. i would try not to let it get chewed up by a coon again. Some dogs can get chewed up by the the same coon and be fine. Just depends on the dog and how receptive they are to getting it. Good luck hope it all works out for ya.

do a search on this site for "coonhound paralysis". There is lots of helpful info. The dog of mine that got it years ago survived and won lots of hunts after he had it, but was never really as good of an athlete ever again. He is 9 now and I no longer hunt him due to health issues.

Unfortunately our dog passed away dismorning I was there and tried to comfort him as much as I could, he had started to struggle to breath about half an hour before he passed! We only owned this dog for around 3 months he was an extremely nice hound in those 3 months we treed 70+ coon with him with only hunting until around midnight each night! We entered him in 2 nite hunts and he won one of them which qualified him for te lee crawford invitation hunt! If anyone elses dog gets this I wish them luck it is a terrible thing to go through! RIP Bo

Sure am sorry for your loss Eric. I would like to see a vet completely devote their effort into a vacc that would help prevent this disease.
