smack him under the chin a little, teach him that when he moves his head he will get punished... (take that how you will, i have heard of people using shock collars on REALLY stubborn dogs)

Seriously? A shock collar on the bench??
As a BSJ myself I don't really care if a dog is looking around on the bench as long as it's not falling or jumping off the bench while I'm trying to judge the things I can't see on the ground.
Hold its head with a knuckle hooked under the jaw if it's that big an issue. I've done the majority of my judging while the dog was was on the ground anyhow. IMO teaching them to gait properly and stand attractively on the ground is more important than teaching them not to blink an eye or twitch a muscle while they're standing on the bench.

I place their head in position and say stay or freeze, if they move it I say no and reposition their head and repeat the say or freeze command after a while they get the idea. never would I use a shocking collar I want them to want to work for me not fear me.

Where is it they did the Iron Man competitions.....Montana, Idaho?? Maybe that's how the bench shows should be judged. Let those dogs drag those handlers to the tree and see who gets there first. We can throw some water in the middle of it for good measure. Don't need to be giving show titles to dogs that can't swim! Then we'll put them up on the bench and maybe they'll be too tired to fidget much.

Lol....I can not see shocking a dog for moving his head. Just do your part and if you do it well enough, your dog will do theirs as well. So many people kill me when they practice bench showing with the dog 2 days before an event and then take it out on the dog because he didn't handle perfectly. Most important!!! Have fun!!!

1st thing they would have to do is get rid of the thread around
there neck and put a real lead on them or just turn them
loose.who wants a dead headed dog.

I agree, when the persob told me that, I was like "really?!" Cuz my pup isn't even 6 months old yet and he loves the bench cuz I make it fun for him, their dog is almost deathly afraid of the bench, he won't jump on it or go anywhere near it in their house (but once he is on it that boy doesn't move a hair on his body)

Gait Show or Bench Show?

Hi,

Maybe they should change the event to gait show. Want to judge gait? Turn a coon loose. Just my opinion. Trail hounds put their nose to the ground. How unnatural to trot around a ring with their head up chasing hot dog pieces like a poodle in some AKC dog show event. JMO

Good Hunting,
Robert

gait shows the natural movement of the dog. poodle or hound. a lot of times a really good handler can hide a defect. but when the dog gaits you can't hide it. and when i speak of gait i mean the dog walking naturally not beig forced to prance. btw my dog trails with his head up or straight off his body. but he's a fast tracker who can move a track.
