Cage coon??

I've never really used to many caged coon to train my hounds before but recently have been trying them out! I showed my black and tan pup a caged coon at 4 months and he wasn't interested in it, and now he is 6 months old. Should I show him another one? Also training tips that work with using a caged coon?

About the only thing a caged coon is good for is to let the pup get a smell of what it's suppose to hunt.

Alot of young dogs won't bark a caged coon the first time they see it. It helps to have another dog that the pup is used to that will bark at the coon. Once the pup gets fired up at it you can take the older dog away.

I wouldn't do this more than a couple of times though.

This is definitley true, I almost ruined a dog that way. He barked like crazy when he seen a coon, but didn't know what else to do.

some young dogs are scared of the cage set the cage out
let it get use to it 1st if its scared put the dog up turn the
coon loose put the cage up turn the dog loose it dont
get any hotter

yea don't show em too many. they will start barking like crazy at every empty cage they see. they won't even need a coon in it. i will show them at least 1.

Ok I'm gonna start letting a couple cage coon loose in front of him and see if he can tree it... Thanks for the input!!

Let one go in front of him then let him loose. Then let one get out of site and let him track it. make him use his nose.

Ok good deal. I'm no beginner coon hunter but I've never fooled with cage coons before.. But I figure might as well lol

I've got a 10 acre meadow that a powerline cuts across. The first one I turn loose I turn towards one of these poles with the dog close behind. The coon runs up the pole and the dog can see it good. After this they get turned loose without the dog seeing it then cut the dog loose and hunt it towards the track. I have also had some pups that wouldn't bark at the cage coon. I then show them the coon while they're still tied to their box. Seems like they're more confident at home where they're used to their surroundings. Dont always work but it's something to try.
