Dr. jeckyl/mr.hide

what do you do with a dog that is a sure enough hard tree dog,has almost always gotta coon(prolly 90%)of the time, honest,a real pleasure to hunt(when he's alone),and then with almost any kind of company he'll just jam the he** outa possums, and it just make a fella sick, what do you do with that?

Why would you shoot something out to a dog (reward) and then beat them with it (punish). Never shoot something out of a tree that you don't want your dog to tree.

Seeing how he doesn't tree them alone, hunt him with something else and make life hard for him for a week or so, if you have a E-collar use it. Every possum should carry a heavy price. Then after he stops with company treeing them with company, find the possum treeinest dog in the country and proceed to start over again.

old guy

I don't fall into this category. I have seen my uncle break dog by shooting them out and beating them with the oppossum. People have all different methods. If he wants to tree a oppossum he probably will. I heard shock on it, tie it on its collar and let it rot off, put it in a barrel with a dog and roll down a hill. I have seen dogs that were tough to break. I thought one time about putting one in a cage in side the kennel and leave it for a long time. You will probably have to feed and water it to keep it alive. Maybe the dog will get tired of it and leave them alone or it may make him worse about. I have never tried this if you have what was the outcome. Can't wait to see the comments on this one. LOL

I won't say how old I am but I started following coonhounds 33+ yrs ago and I'm not talking starting when I was 10 years old._ And today I do alot of things differently today then I did just 10 yrs ago.

I've had to break EVERY dog I've owned off possum for the past 15 yrs. Different methods work for different dogs but shooting out and beating has always done one thing for me, it makes them leave the treed possum just as I get to the tree._ I'll shock one in a hearbeat if I know they have a possum treed as long as the dog knows I don't like possums and I can kill it the next coon it trees.

What works for me might not work for you, but I've had more luck finding a live possum and doing all my work away from a tree._ My philosophy is "If they won't run a possum, they won't tree a possum".__
