Is a coonhound field trial the same thing as a treeing contest?

Okay, I'm still new and stupid so forgive my question. When my father hunted I don't remember them saying field trial for any event. I remember the nite hunts, water races, treeing contests, and bench shows. Is a field trial the same as a treeing contest, or has a new event been added?

There are no stupid questions, A field trial is when they lay down a scent trail that ends at a tree, usually with a coon in a cage, or a coon skin in a cage or whatever. The dogs are brought out to the starting point, lined up, then released. Hopefully they'll follow the scent to the tree. There will be a finish "line", and then a circle on the ground around the tree. The first dog across the line, wins "line". The first dog to "tree" within the circle, wins "tree". You win titles just like the bench show, water race, and nite hunt. Treeing contests are usually just for fun.

That explains it pretty good. Many confuse a Dash Race with a Field Trail because they're similar. FT is longer and has specific rules . If you can find the Coonhound event rules on here it will give you a good idea of it. Most of the rules are similar to the Water Race with the obvious wet & dry difference

Back when having a coon in a cage wasnt such a big deal most all the clubs had treeing contests. the dog with the most barks in 60 seconds was the winner.

and in the treeing contest you can let your dog sniff the caged coon but in a field trail the dog has to find it itself, to show it's hunting ability. a field trail is a UKC licensed event but a treeing contest is just for fun (but they should make it a UKC event cuz it takes work! lol) i think both are fun but treeing contests are just for bragging rights, dont under estimate that fat, old, red dog in a treeing contest my friend! lol or any fat old dog
