For those of you that haven't hunted a mountain lion, walking and casting hounds for a track is lots of fun whether it's in the dirt or a little snow. Personally I like the dirt better for a hike but the snow isn't bad if it isn't too deep or cold. Perhaps the most enjoyable part of a outing is the strike, walking and watching the hounds cast and then seeing which hound finds that track and gives out his/her proclamation "here it is over here."

In the little video above, I had five of my hounds with me and my Kody dog got first strike. The track was an old tom lion track and probably several days old, but I was in the mood to hike and the dogs wanted to trail. Besides a guy always hopes they'll freshen the track up even though it seldom happens on a traveling tom lion, as there isn't enough hours in the day or enough energy in a pack of hounds to overtake a lion that far ahead of them.

On this hunt my hounds trailed that track all day and I got in close and pulled them half an hour before dark. I realized that freshening up that track would be like me drawing a Henry's Mountain deer tag which just isn't going happen. But the walk was fun (as I recall) and my hounds and I enjoyed the opportunity. Nothing builds character or endurance for the chase like grinding on an old lion track for eight or ten hours, and it makes a guy appreciate a pop up or easy catch when they happen.......

This is my Kody dog under a huge tom lion tree a few years back........he is now a six year old and in his prime.
