Season Finale !!!
Last night was pretty much the season finale for the coon hunters in Massachusetts. And a nice night it was for Ellie ! Have been hitting the woods consistently through out the season, so tonight I decided just to hunt one dog.
First drop she made a decent tree. Couldn't find the coon. The second drop I decided to try a new area. All I was certain of was the good chunk of woods , and a country back road would minimize the risk of cars. The night air was crisp and made for good listening . It didn't take long before the chase was on. Ellie working sounded awesome in the cold air. It took about twenty minutes or so and a looooong bawl , then chop. TREED !! As I headed to the tree ,Yep , another swamp !! Choked with saplings , beaver runs and swamp grass. It took a bit to get into where Ellie was treed. I was hoping to see the coon walking in . No such luck. A medium size white pine sitting on the edge of a beaver pond. At first glance no eyes.Took a few minutes shining to reveal two coons sitting in different parts of the tree . Navigating a better vantage point,to get a shot I couldn't imagine any hound pushing a track in this mess. . Sure made for a nice night though!
