pup training

I have a 10 month old pup that goes with the old dogs and stays gone, he will be at the tree, or meet us about 50 yards from the tree. He isn't treeing or opening on track much, and seems more playful at the tree than interested in treeing. He will jump on a shot out coon and kill it. What should I do to get him going.

He's just too young yet.

Pups get alot of bad habits from being in the woods too young .. if he aint serious and wants to play .... you can't do nothing about that , leave him at home .

Training pups takes patience .... and consistancy . You can't rush puberty or maturity in a dog's body ... all you can do is aggrivate them and mess them up if they aint ready.

Like josh said ... as a rule of thumb , never give a pup a coon that he didn't tree and do a good job on ... if you reward for good behavior and bad behavior both ... then the pup don't learn.

Sounds like you should look at some basic dog training books and study the subject more before getting that pup back in the woods ... if you are serious.

Lastly , as a sportsman ... you owe it to the hunting community to either knock coon out completely dead or don't tell people when you don't ... nothing sounds worse than what you just described ... besides ... don't you think the bullet you shot the coon with that made him fall had more to do with him dying than that pup that you think is so tough ?

What you want to do is get the pup to tree one by himself. I have had several that would not tree just because another dog was doing it. It's not a desirable thing in my mind. This is why I always say train the pup by himself until he knows he can tree his own coon.

Well, i'm sure that every coon you have shot out came out completely dead, you have probaly never missed the head. The dog killing a coon that isn't completely dead is part of the sport. I guess we could just tie the dog back and let the coon die a slow death. Our intentions are for the coon to come out dead, most of the time it does, but anyone that says they knock out 100% of the coon dead is a liar. I don't recall ever saying my pup was tough, when I say he jumped in to kill the coon I meant he grabbed it and got some fur in his mouth. That coon was a good head shot anyway. So I guess I didn't do a very good job of explaining it. I really do appreciate the good advice that I get from this site, but I don't appreciate someone basically telling me that I'm not a good sportsman because a coon wasn't dead when he came out. I've seen far worse descriptions on here about killing coons and squalling coons out to dogs and things of this nature. Thanks for the advice. I will be looking into some books to help me.

I don't think the dog killing a coon is that big a deal. Just letting him wool it is probably enough.

This is a public board , viewed by us and the people who want to take our hunting rights away ... and probably pet owners that use the othe ukc boards but aren't hunters ...

.. it's not too much to ask of folks to not post the kind of stuff you are typing ... hunters don't need to hear what they already know ... and non-hunters don't need to know that kind of stuff that they might not have known already...

I ruined a pup the very same way that you are now starting her to young. good luck with your dog i hope it makes a great one and if your looking for good advise on training a coon dog good luck they are just like people some work some dont and everyone you talk to has a different opinion on what to do that worked for them. I would wait a little bit before i take that dog cause its just wanting time to play and run free. So let it have that time in the woods just dont take it on a coon hunt. As far as the comment about knocking the coon out. Its a sad day in our country that its a good thing to express your self if your gay or if you have different beliefs but you have to hide your hunting storys. But what do i know im just na redneck coon hunter from West Virginia. I mean no ill words to nobody on this post. good luck to all.

Just give the pup time. My pup (13 months) just started turning on and barking treed and on the trail 2 months ago. Keep your cool and have patience. Everyone told me that and it felt like she never would tree or trail but now that she is it makes it all the more fun! good luck w/ your pup!
