Wow, I don`t think I`d pull their nails! I have a gyp here that used to climb bad, she fell twice knocking one of her front teeth out. I decided that I`d either break her from it or I`d end up with a dead dog. Next time she climbed a leaner I pulled her down and put her on the leash. I`d give her some slack and when she got more than her front feet on the tree I switched the crap out of her and pulled her back. After about 4 times she stayed at the bottom of that tree and treed nice. She`s never climbed since. She`s a smart dog thats seems to understand what you want fast. My thought was if I didn`t break her she was going to fall and get killed so I had nothing to lose. She was also a hard solid treedog so the switching never hurt her treeing.
