Fur Prices / Weather

With these above normal temperatures the coon can't be priming? Un-primed fur should drive the prices down a bit more shouldnt it?

Thats to bad.

THE BIG COON ARE GETTING THEIR GARD HAIRS. THE SMALL COON STILL HAVE THEIR SUMMER FUR.

How prime the fur is has nothing to do with the weather. It has to do with the shortening photoperiod and the coons diet. Older coons do prime up faster than younger coons. Here in Michigan it doesn't matter if you are in the U.P. or down south they prime up about the same time. Most bigger coons will be prime by November 1st. The smaller coons take a couple weeks more.

Hey Larry. I want to get set up to do my own hides by next year. Would it be ok if I gave you a call or maybe made a trek out your way to see how you do it and get some ideas on how to set up my fur shed? I am only going to do my own.

Tracy,

No problem, you would be welcome over anytime. The best tool for fleshing coons is a Knecker 600.

FnT has most everything you would need, and I usually get my orders in 1-2 days.

Tracy,

Here is another great source of info.

http://www.furharvesters.com/pelthandling.htm

Click on the 1st PDF file to the right called Fur Handling.

Josh,

It works on all 6 of the coons we get every year.

Must be you guys know I am gonna have a bumper year if I am getting 6! The goal is to get everything settled by next year. Gonna use whatever I make in hides this year to get me going for next year. Curtis may get in on it too if he has time. Many hands lighter work you know.

Prime Hides

Thanks alot for clearing up the old wives tale about cold weather priming up hides. It's the same old story with deer coming in rut and our Jack rabbits turning white. It has to do with the amount of daylight hours. The retina in the eye triggers most of it. Some folks will alway's be non believers.
