Anyone have any ideas or ways to get a dog to lead? she don't pull on the leash she stays behind you and won't move have to drag her.I usually just turn my dogs loose right out of the box and they will follow me out of the woods without a leash just got to where I want use a leash now and then.
Getting to the point where I've about had it with her and close to getting out my shovel.

Try getting some bacon strips or something like that. How old is she? My 4 year old boy has taught my pup to lead and got him started benching? Have patients with her if she thinks you are getting mad she will get worse from fear. Do a lot of petting and get her to trust you then start with a slight tug when she refuses to lead, don;t yank on her she will just want to lay down. When she moves pet her or reward her.

You want to make being on the leash a good experience. A couple of times a day for 5 min put her on the leash. Make it fun. Don't even walk the first couple of times. Just slowly move around a step at a time while treating/praising. Then as sessions go on, gradually work your way to leading her normally. This way she will figure out what you want her to do in a possitive way.

walk at square 20 steps per side. on a 15ft leash with slack... do that for 30 mins... what ever happens you just walk the sq... if they get tangled up... keep moving..looking the other way keep moving. Stop at the corners... they will get the idea to pay attention to you... after about a week of this put them on a short leash to fine tune them.

Put her on a 6 foot lead. Let the lead droop down past your knee. Every time you take a step kick the lead with your knee and it will give her head a jerk and the only way she gets away form it is to scoot up. Make right turns and kick the lead with your knee to get her on up were she is supose to be. Be sure every time she gets beside you to pet her head but dont stop walking to do it. You can allso use weinies to reward her when she gets in the right spot. Weinies are slick and go down easy and doesn't dry out the mouth. Just use very small peices.
Oh use a choke chain and it will go a lot faster. Once she learns you won't need it.

i put all my pups on a chain for at least a month, it keeps them from getting bored in a kennel run and it teaches them somewhat not to jerk on a chain and whatnot. other than that you just got to be patient and drag them ........ same theory as using a mule to halter break a stear calf. just keep on pullin! LOL

i agree best thing to teach a young dog to lead is kids,they can get them walking after about a week you take over and teach them the basics.my kids and now my grandkids break my young dogs to lead.

dont get the dog afraid of the leash, boil some cheap liver then bake it. put the leash on her, let her smell the liver and give it a very small piece, then tug lightly, and hold the liver out. honey gets you more out of life than vinegar. she will go crazy for the liver, go to your local butcher and they will usually give you all you want for free!! good to use to teach to load too.

The bigest mistake a trainer makes is locking into one way. The bigger the bag of tricks the more kinds of dogs you can train. What works on one will not work on another. What ever it takes for that particular dog is what it takes. Some are hard and you can train them about any way while others are soft and you need to use other methods.
One lagging behind is usualy a sign it is scared or soft. Another thing yu can do is go to any library and get a book on dog obeidence and go to the healing section. Every trainer will have differant methods to some degree.
I personally have gotten lazy and went to the e-collar. I can train a hard or soft dog in minutes. Put dog on leash with e-collar and start a light nick. Just enough you can see the dogs neck twitch and keep nicking about the speek of your heart beat. Keep it going till you get the dog in the sweet spot were you want it and stop the nick and tell it good dog. Just takes a few minutes for it to figure out were it has to stay.

I've done the putting her on a chain thing all she does is set there and not move at all the entire time she is tied up.Dragging this dog don't work all it does is scare the heck out of her.Guess I'll borrow my friend's kids for a couple weeks and see what happens with that.

I had one that wouldn't walk on a leash...Put it on a splitter with another dog and after 2 nights she walked on a lead on her own.

I use to do the same thing, but nearly killed my pup when he was four months old like that, and after only a short trip across the back yard to the truck.
The pup locked up his legs and the old dog drug him.
The pup started caufing, and I stopped then the pup fell over and spit up blood and passed out.
I will never do that again.

That bites. mine was a 6 month old female that hadn't been messed with when we got her. I hooked her up to her momma who we happend to have at the time and that made a world of difference.
