nursing female????

does anyone know of any natural food i can feed my female to make her produce more milk??? she is due in about three weeks. her last litter she laid on 4 and only raised 4 because i dont think she had enough milk. i was just wondering if there is anything i could start adding to her food now to help her with her milk supply.

I always start about two weeks before the female is due. I will feed her a good puppy food. I am feeding a female who is nursing pups right now a chicken and rice feed. It is a 30/20 and she has seven pups and all are big and healthy. Sometimes it is not a bad idea to put a little powdered milk on the feed.

My female that had pups in April was not producing enough milk at first...

I started adding WATER to her food.. (Thank you for the hint Cassandra) I was feeding 8 cups of Purina Pro Plan Puppy chow and it was not helping.. And I bumped it up to 10 cups, and still not working.. So I started adding water to her food..

I fed her 3 to 4 times a day and filled the bowl up with water.. So basically she has cereal.. I also bought some milk replacer and added just a bit of it to another bowl of water during the day..

She was not drinking enough water... and therefore not producing enough milk...

+ lots of attention and a highprotien diet thats all the puppy food is.....oh and the purina puppy foods first item is CORN??? so we quite feedin that and stuck with adult food highprotien.....Im sure somebodys not gonna agree but thats what weve done in the past.

You could also mix in Milk Replacer, that you get at the feed store for raising calves. It seems to keep the female in good shape and the pups love it !

I never did ask how that worked out for you Mel. Must have worked.

I have found supplements and all that can be more harm than good. If you have them on a good diet thats all they should need. I worry too much about them getting Mastitis to fool around with nature...

Momma dogs tend to get dehydrated, thus slowing the milk production. MAKING them drink more usually does the trick. I also notice allowing them to free feed, they often eat once or twice a day, so they have periods where they aren't absorbing nutrients as fast as they are putting them out...

So like I recommended to Melanie. Feed them more meals a day, where they HAVE to eat it (offer it every hour if you have to), and put a lot of water in it (ceral consistancy, NOT soaked), so they HAVE to drink it to eat.
