Coonhound paralysis…(YUCK!!!!)

I just had a dog come down with this, he has had it for 9 days as of today (5-10-10). He has not become fully paralyzed, he can move his legs, turn himself over and kind of crawl/flop around. He also still has his voice.

Here are some questions:

1; Has anyone ever had a dog with CHP only get this bad and not go fully paralytic? How long did it take that dog to recover?

2; Did you ever coon hunt the dog again? If so did the dog ever get bit again? Did the dog ever develop CHP again? Was the dog the same mentally and physically afterwards?

3; Around the time that your dog got sick (maybe within a year or less time frame) did any other dogs hunting in the same general area get CHP? I ask this because another person I know had a dog come down with CHP in January. They were hunting, probably not more than 10 miles, as the crow flies, from where my dog was hunting when he got ahold of the coon that made him sick.

4; What, if any, kind of treatments did your vet try?

5; Anyone in California heard of anyone else’s dog coming down with CHP in the last few months?

Any other words of advice on caring for a dog with CHP? The hardest thing for me is getting him to go potty, he doesn’t always want to go because he can’t get away from it very well. The crappy weather right now isn’t exactly helping either. He is pretty upset about it, I wish there was some way to tell him he’ll get better. There was a post on here a while back about a lady, her screen name is muddyrivrkennels. She had a dog that had tick paralysis. She got over it and is doin good far as I no from what ive heard. I think the name of the post is PRAYERS NEEDED. She tells the whole process post by post.

Are you sure it isnt a tick. We have that problem all the time here in Florida. It only takes one tick, even a tiny one in the right place on the spinal column and they will lose control of thier back legs. It is progressive though but we usually have them over it in a day or two by finding the tick and removing it.

I had a dog get it last fall, he was not fully paralyzed and recovered fairly quick. The vet put him on steroids and some kind of antibiotic. Also a food that is high in protien is good as they dont eat well when they get it and it eats away at the protien in their mucles i believe. I started hunting him this spring and he is as good as he ever was almost.

Our dog JUST GOT OVER THIS - only took her about a month. She was pretty much like you said your dog was, for the entire month she was down. I said she was doing her "sea lion impression" - she would crawl around but couldn't get up on her own, she never lost her voice. Biggest thing for us is she wasn't wild about eating and lost a ton of weight - but more importantly was making sure she was getting water because she wasn't really into drinking either. That's what really kept her alive, was keeping her hydrated. We moved her inside so she was a bit better monitored.

As far as treatment, the first vet she went to prescribed her steroids - this is generally considered a no-no! After talking to my vet for a while and reading up on the condition and whatever differentials look about the same, it was determined the best you can really do for these dogs is "supportive care" - make sure you're moving it around so it doesn't get sores, not letting it sit in it's own waste, and ensure it's staying hydrated/fed. Basically, my vet said there's not much more you can do unless it starts having trouble breathing - then you have respiratory paralysis and you have to decide how much you like a dog, 'cos ventilators are expensive.

HOWEVER, it sounds like your dog is doing the same ours was - if that's the case, keep it hydrated, and it's spirits up seriously - we spent a lot of time just generally goofing around with her and the other dogs, and a month later she's running around like a crazy person.

Edit to Add: As far as going potty goes, we a tree lead around her belly right in front of her back legs and basically supported all her weight for her between there and her collar, to make her feel like she could walk and kinda "walked"/let her stumble around like that...

I had a dog sick with it for i would say 3 months. it took longer than that before his was back up to snuff. The 1st vet i took him to did not know what he was doing I allmost lost my hound. He could only move his head fed him chicken noodle soup and kept moving him around he made it. The 2nd vet gave him antibiotic he said the chp would not kill him but pneumonia and bad sores would. He never got it again and lived to be 14yrs old vet said some dogs get it some dogs don't, thay also can carry it for a year before they get sick. Hope your dog gets well!!!!

have had a dog go through this, question for you. do you hunt near dairy farms, my dog caught a coon on a dairy farm where there was about a 100 half buried dead cows, after doing some reading this disaese is linked with cattle and a disaese contracted to humans from cattle, cant remember the name, she has no lie, caught about 30-40 coons on the ground before the coon on the dairy farms with no problems, thankfully she made a total recovery and hasnt caught any on the ground after this, I now always make sure coons are complete dead before the dogs get them

no, no dairies where I hunt. Where did you find the information that linked it to a cattle disease?
That is the problem here is that sometimes the coons don't tree, I'd love to be able to coon hunt him some more but I'm not convinced its worth going through this again. Thats why I'm really curious how many people have had there dogs get bit again and what happend.

Anyone notice their dogs breathing different? I had to take him to the vet this morning, because I thought he had pnemonia. But the x-rays look good. He did choke on some food last night and that seemed to really set it off, he coughed, gurgled and had labored breathing all night. He is a little better today, put him on another anti-biotic to hopefully keep him from getting pnemonia. His breathing is quicker and shallower than normal, I think maybe its been that way the whole time and I just hadn't noticed until yesterday (he is kind of nervous in the house so sometimes its hard to tell why he's doing something). He still had some voice left yesterday morning and he can still whine. The vet thinks he is having some laryngel paralasis - this is what happens when they can't bark.
How long did everyones dogs symptoms worsen before the leveled off? He has had it for 11 days now...I'm just praying this breathing thing does not get any worse. I'm not sure how I could handle that mentally or financially.

I had a dog back in the late 70's get CHP. It takes time but he should eventually make a full comeback. The only thing is that once they had CHP they are more prone to have it a second time. If they get it again it's a lot worse for you and your dog. Good luck and I wish you and your hound the best recovery.

i had one the vet thought it was cdp his mouth hung open he couldnt shut it and just lapped at the water all day and couldnt eat he gave me some atibiotics and he came out of it after about a month his mouth stayed a little foamy but he hunted fine turned out to be a nice hound
