Hardtime Speck
I was reading some of the posts on Hard Time Speck. Saw some things and thought I would set the record straight. I will turn 64 years old my birthday. I hunted coon many many years. I started at nine years of age and was taught all the tricks to train a hound by an uncle that knew what he was doing , he hunted for fur, (one of the old ones) saw many fine hounds over the years. The best hound I ever hunted was Hard Time Speck, bar none. He was owned by James Carleton in Shelbyville TN...Mr. Carleton , Bob Parker, and I hunted together. Mr Carleton sold the hound to Bates . I had a special thing I could do. Climb any tree and get a coon down. I was extremely strong and had unnatural balance. Do you want to make a coon dog? Climb a tree hes is treeing on and put that coon on the ground. There were many coons shook out to Hard Time. Hard Time was one of the Hardest Treeing dogs I had ever seen in my life. He would stick in the hardest rain and storm and never falter. Hard Time was hunted seven days a week and he could take it. Turn him loose and he would get yonder and waste no time about. He would trail and wasn't an extreme babbler , Hard Time would push for that tree and blow the top out when he got there. Hard Time was a truthful hound and very few times that I know of did he ever run off game when we hunted him. Mr. Bates got the hound and as time progressed Hard Time took his place in coon hunting history twice I see that his fame is has continued thru his offspring. Hard Time is buried in Al. from what I remember, been there one time. Hard Time has a monument gravestone over him bigger than I will ever have over me. This was a once in a life time hound and it was a once in a life time experience. As I stood down south at Hard Time's grave I realized someone loved the Hound enough to literally spend a fortune just to bury Hard Time. Every little boy that was raised hunting dreams of a World Champion Coon dog . I was very grateful to be a small part in Hard Time's journey. My name is Tony Collins and I am a retired Police Officer from Shelbyville Tn.
