What do we do in michigan until running season opens?

do we let our dogs get fat? can joining a local club benifit us? damage conrtol is an option but most of the land i hunt is not farm land. Do we risk getting caught? What do you michiganders do from April 15-July15?

I have very few places where I can do damage control. So I only hunt one night a week this time of year. But that being said, I just try to get my dog out as much as I can. When I can't get him out, I let him run in the backyard, almost an acre fenced.

When I can't hunt, I get my honey do list knocked down. I also fish.... C'mon FRIDAY! Fishing a private pond! LOADED!

There's a hunt every weekend somewhere in Michigan with field trails, water races and bench shows along with the hunts at several clubs. Most are doing all they can to keep the doors open and money may be better spent there than in fines if you get caught.

It's a great time of year for clubs to put on the HTX hunts as an alternative. Plus, it might pull more entries this time of year! MArk Bellevue on your calendars for one on May 1st! Come on over!

Damage Control

Most of the spots I hunt are farms. So for me and my dogs it will be damage control until season opens back up.

PS. What are these HTX hunts im seeing all over the message boards, i've never heard of them before??

Fishing and Horse Shoes and Grilling and Listening To The Tigers and Camp Fires and Playing Guitars. Oh, and scouting new hunting spots on the quads.

Keeping your dogs fit is the most important thing. I have roaded my dogs in the past, but can't anymore due to the local LEO. They tell me it is cruel.

I tried a treadmill, but it is very loud and the dogs are not fond of it. I have tried bicycles, but that can be dangerous not to mention I recommend a helment and a protective cup.

Swimming is a good option if you belong to a club or have a pond.

Yes, there are events during quiet time, but the events are no place for training. Then there is still the the fact that to be competitive the dogs need to be in top physical shape. Sort of a catch 22 there!

Other choices include run your dog in designated state training areas; do what is necessary to have some property designated as a private dog training area; or as already mentioned take care of nuisance coons.

I will be trying something new this year to achieve the dogs excercise needs and I will let everyone know how that goes.

The fact remains that hunter apathy in our great state is at an all time high, and until we can get everyone to stand united support their state association and become involved changes are very unlikely. Especially, when it is so much easier just to go and ignore the rest of the world as if it doesn't exist ... otherwise said bury your head in the sand.

In the meantime, I plan on fighting tooth and nail for my lifestyle.

I don't know your states laws on coyotes but up here in mn when our dnr use to shut us down for a couple months for nesting season. We would just take our coonhounds out coyoye hunting at night. We couldn't help it if our dogs kept switching off coyotes and getting treed! Most states coyote season is open year round.Just something to think about if you get stopped one night! It has worked for me in the past.

Paul,

We are not allowed to run coyotes here year around. We can however get fox permits for state land only, but believe me this really peeves off the local CO Officers. I hear an ear full on this issue at least once a year from one of our two local CO offices that I have to contact regarding our nite hunt permits.

Wow, I feel for you guys over there. I thought the MN dnr had some goofy laws. Maybe I wont cuss at our laws so much. does the dnr over there have a good reason for shutting you guys down? I know about nesting season and all that but every state has birds that nest.
