I've got a 15 month old B&T that can tree every drag or cage coon I turn loose for her. I think she is just about to figure the tracking process on wild coons. I've got a coon at the house I caught today that I think I'm gonna wait til dark, get her fired up on it, get where she can't see the coon turn it loose and let her track it. Does this sound good or does anybody have some suggestions?

just take it to a easey ground and turn the coon loose then take your dog and if she runs and trees it shoot it out to her.then no more so she will learn to hunt deeper for one.just my advice .david

I agree with Mr. Boggs 100%

I have a neighbor that has turned i bet 30 coon loose to his young dog and is struggling to get him to go hunting.

A cage coon can be great for getting one started but do not overdue it.

Time alone in the woods with you, a pup and a .22 riffle is priceless.

It can be aggrevating wasting evenings in the woods with a pup by yourself but if you stay the course it will pay huge dividends in the long run.

Just my opionion.

Turning coons loose for pups and young dogs is a good thing, but when I turn one loose, whether they tree it or not, I load them up and go to another spot and WALK them to try and get them around HOT wild coon tracks. To me, the best thing for a pup or young dog is ONE ON ONE between the pup and handler. Good Luck with your hound

Well I got her fired up(sorry David I think she would have saw me go get the coon anyway), I turned it loosed in our food plot, brought her down to where I turned it out at and she tracked it and put it up a tree. Our food plot had just been burned and I think this messed her up on the track (has anyone had this happen?) but when she got on unburned stuff she found it fast. Then I took her to a feeder and turned her out but she didn't hunt real far and there hadn't been anything on the feeder.

turn it a loose 30-45 minutes before you go hunting.
turn it a loose 100 yrds from where you turn the dog loose at
are how ever far the garmin says she is hunting out.
