Autumn Oaks/Winter Classic/UKC World
UKC has licensed competition coonhunts for 50 years, the first being held in Ingraham, IL on September 18-19, 1953. Since then there have been 44 Autumn Oaks, 15 Winter Classics and 25 World Hunts. The first Autumn Oaks was held in Greencastle and was won by Dale Brandenburger hunting a Plott called Pioneer Drum. Dale was also the winner of the first licensed UKC nite hunt in 1953 hunting Elwood Overbeck's Lucky dog, also a Plott. Since then Autumn Oaks has been held in numerous places. Kalamazoo, MI; Paducah, KY; Coldwater, MI; Cassopolis, MI; Centreville, MI; Winston-Salem, NC; Oak Harbor, OH; Logansport, IN; Jasper, IN, and pretty much everywhere else you can imagine. It finally settled in Richmond, IN and has been there for the last 12 years. Having the hunt in one good location has helped the numbers rise greatly. This has also been the effect of having the Winter Classic in one location. Folks can plan ahead and know exactly what it takes to make the trip.
The World Hunt does move around and the numbers do not flucuate due to the fact that only the top 100 dogs from around the country can come. I like the fact that the Zones, Finals all move as it gives the impression of fairness to folks from all around. It will be in Lagrange, IN again this year but who knows where it will land next year.
