Anyone able to tell me something about these animals. Will hounds tree them, will they kill off other small game, coons squirrels, turkeys etc.

yes and yes.They will tree and jump.Hard to get one to stay up.They are about like a yote,eat anything that wont eat them.

I've never treed one but 2 yrs. ago I watched one let a bear know who was in control of a bait site that I happened across. He was inside the bait barrel and a black bear came in to feed and that fisher let him know that he was not done yet and the bear sat back and waited for his turn, 12-15 lbs. of muscle a pure killing machine. Their favorite food is quill pig and house cats.

Well first, they're fishers..not fisher cats! LOL. It just rubs me the wrong was hearing them called fisher-cats. No offense meanet to ya. They're just a big mink like thing. Yes they'll tree, and they'll also give quite a run sometimes, depends on the fisher. They mainly eat pine squirrels, so without hemlock or cedar stands with a lot of pine and/or gray squirrels you often wont find fisher there. They'll switch trees like a squirrel, and the few I've treed were pretty active up there running around the tree top so they dont often try to hide and not look lke a coon does sometimes (except for one that was just curled up in a little ball sleeping lol). I've never seen evidence of this, but I think they'll raid a coon nest and eat the kits if they find them. I doubt they're any danger to an adult coon. Usually when I see a lot of fisher tracks during the winter I dont see many coon kits on the game cams. They're also real hard on game birds. Hides are worth a lot more than coon too.

They're not nearly as mean as people say either, infact they're very easy to catch and when in a cage trap they just sit there looking at ya. Coon are much meaner when caught if you ask me. I always get a chuckle when I hear the stories of "fisher cats killed my neighbors cow one night" LOL. Their reputations are a LOT bigger than they are lol.

I have treed a ton of them. My worst day was five. If you have fast dogs they are easy to tree.

When they were overpopulated in WI. the bobcats and porcupines disappeared. They are down right now and the bobcat and porcupine populations have exploded. They did not seem to hurt the coon.

The fisher is one of the largest members of the Mustelid family, which includes the weasels, mink, otter, and skunk. Fishers exhibit what is referred to as sexual dimorphism (physical differences) in body size between males and females. Adult male fishers weigh 8 to 16 pounds and measure approximately 3 feet from head to tail. Adult female fishers average 20% smaller than males, weighing 4 to 6 pounds and measuring approximately 2 1/2 feet in length. In both males and females, the tail accounts for approximately 1/3 of the total body length. The fisher exhibits the typical "weasel" shape with a long, slender body, short legs, and furred tail. They have a pointed face (although not as pronounced as fox or coyote) with large, rounded ears set close to the head. They are well adapted for climbing and have sharp, retractable claws similar to those of domestic cats. If caught on the ground a fisher can do a number on a hound. I saw a big male hound that a fisher ripped from his brisket to his nuts and he died before they could get him to a vet.

fishers are the fastest north american game animal in trees. they kill everything they can including sruirrels stray cats raccoons and roosting turkeys they like woods with hollow trees to den up in they are also the only predator that can digest and entire pourcupine, yes even the quills they will tree and keep jumping tree they will also run dogs up and down a creek bottom till they get the dogs wore out and tear them up. I had some younger dogs tore up on their head from a big male fisher last year that my buddy then trapped and he ended up being 44 inches nose to tail . these are a lot bigger and meaner version of a pine marten. many people will confuse them with a marten, i cought a big female fisher 2 years ago in a live trap that was set for coon with a can of fish when i got the trap the fisher had absoutely shredded the can into pieces so small they fell out of the wire mesh.

Heres pics I snapped of 3 different fisher I've caught while trying for coon. Notice the burnt wire on the cage, that's from the fire they breathe. Fisher is actually an indian word, it means "demon from the pits of hell". We used to have Grizzly Bears around here until the fisher killed them all off. I know a guy that gutted a fisher and inside it he found a VT license plate, an old tire, and snowmobile helmet with the head still in it! They're evil critters, blood thirsty killers that cant be stopped.

..greyhound found this one... we got a special state tag to mount it...(hated to see it wasted)... You can only trap them here in MA, can't hunt them. We can shoot them if they go after our chickens etc... BUT... if we do we HAVE to throw them away-period...we cannot use, sell etc fur or carcass. The taxedermist had to use a really small form for this one... not a reg. Fisher one... Unfortunately we could not salvage the skull for our skull collection... it was shattered...

Our greyhound tracked it about a mile down the road- Thankfully he did not come face to face with it ALIVE... (greyhounds have THIN SKIN)... this is a very small one(I think female but forget...

Also have some game cam pix of a REALLY big one, has to be a male... we get them on the cam if we have chicken carcasses etc... Fishers REALLY like doggie bag scraps from steak etc... I suspect they have GOOD noses! I don't have the cam pix on here yet though. I have lots of cam pix of critters just for fun, on the property(and security)... we have other fisher pix, some probably in my photobucket acct already... but the BIG dude is not added yet. If I find them and they're DECENT I'll post em.

I have never heard them but the neighbors wake from them screeching. They kill pet cats around here when the yotes don't get them first...
I have heard they are a real pain in the neck if they are in your coonhunting woods. Have heard they do kill off young coon and other critters. If they have lots of easy chickens, turkeys, kitty cats and food scraps to eat they seem to leave us alone...which is just fine since Bob wont like having to kill one... Seems such a waste if they can't be used for something. We were VERY grateful to the state to let us mount this one.

Yes the hounds do tree them and yes they do catch a lot of small game. They are fast in a tree and pretty mean. I saw a show one time where a guy raised a pair up and introduced them back in the wild and they could catch those little red squirrels in a tree and I thought the squirrels were fast. It may have been Marty Stouffer but i am not sure.

there aney way a man could get a big pretty male just one to have it skined and sent off to have it soft tanned to hang up in my log house becalws they look mean as hell and i would love to have one soft tanned to hang up but it has got to be leagal and if you know please pm me about one thank you david boggs ps hope you can read my bad spelling

Heather, your mount looks awesome! Congrats on that. They did a great job.

Slade...yikes, I hate to see box sets with a 220 in them. Very indescriminate set, likely to catch bird dogs, hounds, ....anything that could get hungry and reach in there. Why not use tree sets? A 110 in a tree (45 degree leaner) is a deadly setup and safely out of reach from everything but fisher and squirells.

Ya maybe a 110 is a hair small but a 160 would work better.I to hate to see a 220 set on the ground in areas that hounds run in.I no a few people that trap fishers and all they use is the leaning poles sets catch alot of fishers.

hi i have traped alot of fisher threw the years and if your not catching fisher on leaning pole its to small for them use a 4in pole and they will go up it easier and for traps a 160 and 220 is good choice up on pole atleast 4 or 5 feet cover trap and put bait close to trap and it will work great but if on ground use a 1 1/2 foot trap in dirthole sets and u can catch as many fisher in them as u can a cubby and if u catch hounds it wont hurt them one bit i caught few dogs threw the years and they was all ok good luck trapping rich
