I have a ??????

Ok this is a place you can chat and get others opions on things. Please try to be nice , because I would love everyone to truly think about this for a min.

Since I was a kid I have been coon hunting and it is in my blood . The one thing every coon hunter has in common is that they want that great dog. Well when coonhunting first started people found a dog that would hunt and hunted it . Most coondogs laid around on the porch till time to go hunting . If the man down the hollow or across the Mt. had a good dog then they would bred to it and it did not matter what it was .

Now it just seems that we are straight line breeding too much . Would you let your son date your grand daughter? Why not ? Are they both not good ?We have come a long way since we started , but it looks like we are going full circle .

I have just been thinking of this ... Now for all of you that are jumping to tell me off , I have one thing for you . There is No Man Alive that can tell me he has a PURE BRED COONDOG.You can say that you have a inbreed dog.

Please I just was thinking and trying to think if we are wrong or are we just trying to hard..I know what the rule say , but shouldn't the rules we use for us be the same for our dogs...

got your point

Very interresting to think about, I understand what your saying it sounds like you been seeing what I've been seeing look at your top bred Walker hounds how many of them have the same great dogs in thier ped? I also have noticed that what we used to call Leopard Curs are now called American Leopard Hounds I have owned both of these breeds and loved them both, but I also have noticed the breeding of these dogs. I've heard of the things that go on in breeding programs that just slip on by thats why I like the D.N.A program U.K.C. has(I know what I'm getting!). But if you talk to some old cur guy's you'll see that they still do it like you said those old timers did, breed a good dog to a good dog no matter what breed it is with great results, but thats why thier called curr's not hounds. But what your trying to say is you feel we could use some fresh blood in these dogs, right? As long as the animal still comes out with brains, a straight tail, and only four legs then it's not to close. This Thread could really start something, LOl.

I also agree whole-heartedly.... as you can probably tell by my name im that feller that breeds to that "good dog over the mountain," I dont own a single straight breed dog, i have, and i prefer a cross breed. I think they are smarter and better hunters, i would put my "Mutts" up against these 'PR' dogs and know they would hold their own. My old Luke dog is 1/2 walker, 1/2 Plott both parents registered. Muffin is 1/2 red bone, 1/4 walker, 1/4 feist. Hell, my Bull dog Jethro aint even full blood. He's 1/2 American Bulldog, 1/4 Boxer, and 1/4 Red-Tick.

I like that post. I LOVE crossbred hounds. Cutter's Red Hooch was one of the most balanced hounds i've seen, not spectacular anywhere just good everywhere. There is not a breed that brings to the woods what the outcrosses and crossbreeds do. I personally really like to outcross. I think its the only way to impove the weaknesses of todays hounds. GOOD POST!!!

i see nothing wrong in what your saying but there is a big difference in what people breed for. i'm not knocking your thoughts but you are breeding for a DOG for your own personal use. i think most people breed to improove THEIR CHOOSIN BREED. yes these hounds were mixed alot in years past. still mixed on a small scale. times change & coon hunting has changed, the value of a coondog has changed. are we making the right desissions on breeding ? time will tell !! can we breed what ever floats our boat, you bet. do we always make a good cross ? NOPE. heck i done what your talkin about 30 years ago. would i do it today ? absolutly not !! i have picked a breed that i prefer & i will TRY my best any time i make a cross to improove MY BREED WITHIN MY BREED !! DO MY IDEAS WORK ? not always but every time it does i got something else to build on to hopefully improove my choosin breed within my choosin breed.

the main reason dogs were bred local dog to local dog was, money, most people didnt travel to coon hunt & most people could care less about papers. all of this has changed for the most part in a very short period of time.

Great post, should get some great responces. As far a local dog to local dog, i agree lack of money for travel probably was a big part of it. One reason i believe in local breeding is because i absolutely know what i am breeding to rather than another mans word, one night trial, pedigree, win slips from bfe. and so on. Cross breeding is ok with me, I have a female out of the Hooch dog that Casey is talking about and an English gyp and I really like her. When she comes in I'm probably going to breed her to Comas Stylish Pride who is a TW. owned by Justin Bowden. The reason Im breeding to him is Ive seen him go in the same woods my dogs go, where you dont tree more than two or three on a good night with a coondog. My opinion breed Coondog to Coondog and you got a pretty good chance at gettin one, no matter the breed.

Sure put some ears on them.
I watched a show on the people breeding thing a while back and they said the old thing of not being able to marry a first cousin was not true. Said there was not more chance of something being wrong with there kids as any other.
One more thought I had on this was coyote's don't go out of state to breed. The strong survive and breed sis,mom and what ever else is in heat. They have survived haveing bountys put on there head and hunted hard and never hurt the population. Go strong any were you want to look.

line breading is the best tool a breader can have and to know when to out cross like every 3-4 generation and MAKE IT COON DOG TO COON DOG that is just the way i have always breed dogs of all kinds not just the hounds like dobermanns as well.never bread a hound that is NOT A COON DOG LIKE WAT I MEAN IS THE DOGS WAY BETTER THAN AVERAGE

Here is the 4/4 Cross and has taken us 5 years to get to this Point of Selection and Breeding ..

And theirs a reason to the Madness !!!

When a Pup from this litter is Bred to maybe a Treeing Walker with a Heavy Nailor (or Pac-man or Texas Lotto) influence, severial things happens .. Genetics have to go in Pairs and the Frist Pairs to be Made are "Like Pairs" that are most "Dominate" from both the Sire and Dam so Everything leans towards the Walker Strain at first and the other 3/4 on one side of the Breeding is held to last cuz the pairs dont match and is Blended .. These same Pups could be bred to English or Bluetick .. Now their will only be a slight few pup that will Aline just the way you want .. Selection

Thats why 1 Pup in these Crosss looks/Acts/Hunts
Like "Nailor" I got a Full "Nick" on Nailor

Saltlick's "Pac-A-Lotto Lip"

"Nocturnal Nailor"

Dogs are not people. The dogs I have are working dogs. So, to answer your question above, absolutely no comparison between breeding working animals and human beings!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beside, if we as breeders could put our feelings a side we could effectively breed a way some genetic faults. I am sorry but I will never condone cross breeding just to bury traits that I would rather not deal with as a responsible breeder.

it appears your attempting to put hounds on a human level which do you belong to hsus or peta. lol.
line breeding and inbreeding are very good tools in animal breeding however you have to be smart enough to recognize flaws in your animals to be able to inbreed you neeg none of this knowlege to breed coondog to coondog however thats where it stops look at some of these cross bred hounds that were top hunting hounds how many of them could produce hounds as good as they were. now lets take a look at the line bred hounds that can and do produce good hounds year after year the reason is when you linebreed along with strict culling you will see a line of dogs that keep getting better and more predictable as you have closer gene pool that produces hounds that are more alike generation after generation . as far as the magestic hounds go they don't meet the meaning of the term a breed as a breed has to breed in there own likeness and have a number of like traits
