These days you'd be arrested for having dogs showing bones like that. Looks like they could use a few good meals. Back then they ate what they caught...doubt there was any worm meds either.

It was in a powerpoint slide show called "Really Old Photos" someone sent me. Bunch of really neat old pictures. Here's another one taken in Mercer County Kentucky in 1890. I wonder what's in that barrel he's pulling around...

This picture was taken over 50 yrs ago on Mosquito Creek Road. Pictured is my Grandfather, Bill Whetstine(left), and Afred Karn. The two of them were lifelong friends and hunting buddies posing with their champion coon dogs before an evening hunt. The Model 12 that my Grandfather is holding was passed down, and will continue the tradition in the family of hunting for future generations.

I started out as a boy hunting on Mosquito Creek Road, I love this special property, and I still to this day hunt there. My parents as well as my grandparents, built a desire to chase game throughout the seasons on this property. Not a day goes by when I don't think about my next hunt. It all started when I was about 9, my first bird hunt. It was too early to rise, and the gun was too heavy to carry but I'll never forget those covey rises and the loud flush of a pheasant under my feet. From then on we chased bird dogs around every weekend after pheasants and quail. I loved the excitement of a dog on point and the memories that were left of hunting with friends and family. My passion has only grown from those first days of hunting, now I enjoy hunting many different species.

For the last six years I have been a guide at Rawhide Camp. During that time I have seen alot of great deer and guided many hunters on successful turkey hunts. In the falls, I have spent thousands of hours looking at trail camera photos, picking up and analyzing deer sheds, and trying to figure out how to kill giant whitetails. While in the springs, I have spent roughly 25 days each year chasing eastern gobblers around the bluffs in northeast Kansas. In my life I have met a lot of great hunters and shared stories and camps with people from all over the country. I chat with hunters on a daily basis about gear, treestands, trail cameras, bows, foodplots, and hunting tactics.

Mosquito Creek was built on the foundation to help hunters be more successful while providing awesome storys of the hunt and to bring some cool apparel to hunters across the nation. From generation to generation there has been storys, dreams, legacy's and adventures passed down to continue on. Its the love that burns for us to be outdoorsman and drives us to be sportsman. Mosquito Creek is just another band of outdoorsman than strives to pass it along to the next.

These photographs provided by Terry Wilemon are a wonderful glimpse into a favorite pastime of Itawambians - coon hunting. Even I have been on a coon hunt or two in the hills of Itawamba County during my lifetime! Obviously, these men were pros as evidenced by the number of coon tails they have collected. Dewey Napoleon Johnson, who is Terry's uncle, is standing to the left in the top and bottom photos.

Key Underwood loved his coon dogs. He and his beloved dog, Troop, hunted together for fifteen years before Troop died. Mr. Underwood wanted to honor his friend by doing something special. So on Labor Day in 1937, Mr. Underwood buried Troop near a popular spot in the woods where hunters gathered to listen to their dogs run and swap stories. Other hunters began burying their dogs near Troop's grave, and the area became known as the Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Graveyard. As of Sept 6 2012 the graveyard contains 185 coon dog graves.

In a 1985 interview with columnist Rheta Grimsly Johnson, Mr. Underwood stated that a California woman had contacted him wanting to know why he wouldn't allow other kinds of dogs to be buried in the graveyard.

His response was"You must not know much about coon hunters and their dogs, if you think we would contaminate this burial place with poodles and lap dogs."

"I told you coon hunters were serious about what they do."

For 75 years, there has been a Labor Day celebration at the graveyard with food, music, crafts, clogging, and storytelling. We attended for the first time on Monday, and it was a great day. The music was good, the smell of barbecue filled the air, and we loved seeing many old friends.

Ole Troop would have been proud

1954 Seeburg Coon Hunt Arcade Game

Coon Hunt, 2/54, Seeburg, a two-part (target unit and pedestal) light activation gun game. A light gun style game with a target cabinet and a separate gun cabinet. Much like the earlier Seeburg Shoot the Bear (1947). When hit the coon dodges behind it's tree, then the player must guess which side of the tree the coon will reappear. Each game consists of 20 shots at the target. A marksman rating requires at least 12 hits, a sharpshooter rating at least 16 hits, and an expert rating 19 or 20 hits. Manauls for Seeburg Coon Hunt:

You gotta love the English hound... Lol

The "squealer" sound unit located in the upper right of the cabinet
