Just starting off with trying to use my hounds on lions and Bobcats and wondering what I should get for a tracking collar? I live in North Dakota, mostly prairie, but do have some Mountains, like hills to most of you guys. LOL!!! Should I buy new or Used? I have hunted the 2 of my hounds on coon for the past 2 years and haven't had any problems keeping track of them but I am purchasing a big game hound and am thinking I should invest in a collar because she hasn't been hunted in close. What do you think?

I like to run Johnson collars without changable batteries. I have a wildlife 1000 in the truck with a yaga ant. I also carry a tracker maxima 1000 on me.

I run all marshall collars and I love them. They last a really long time on just aa batteries and they have the lights too which is nice coon hunting. The garmin is great its just that battery life is way too short for me. The only advice I have for you is dont skimp on the tracking gear. Money invested now will pay off in spades.

Wildlife Materials has always been good to me.. Been using the collars for about 9 years and they have always worked when I needed them to..

Marshall or Magnum...

Marshall are the best hands down. They are expensive, and they take changeable batteries though, that's the only thing I don't like. Also noticed they can be hard to 'pinpoint' because the signal is so strong.

Second place is Magnum. Nothing else is even close.

I've had Wildlife, Johnson, WC, Tracker, Quick Track, Rats, ATS, and none of them come close. I still have some Johnson and QT, and it's almost like the dogs aren't even in the same county, when really they are right together. No comparison.

I've had Johnson collars for years and they are good and reliable. But I have been phasing them out and replacing them with Marshalls. If you can afford to buy the Marshall collars, they are well worth the extra money. I like my Quick Track reciever, and I also run Garmin GPS collars on everything.

Of course you can get the job done with less. But when you're out there driving around for hours looking for your dogs, the good stuff can help save you time, fuel, and the stress of worrying about where your dogs are.
