Hot spots on Dog

Can anyone tell me what causes this, and how to treat hot spots.
I have heard of them, and i have seen them on other dogs but I have never had a dog get one until know. Looks like a bare spot down on my dogs ankle about the size of a knickle, the dogs that i saw in the past had a spot up on its hindquarter.
Any INFO greatly APPR.

Did you change up dog foods? I noticed this happened to my one female when i increased the protien in my food. Went back to old and she is fine.
