I've had the folding antenna since back in the summer and am very pleased with mine. You don't want to walk through the woods with it extended all the way out because you could damage it. I hardly ever need to extend mine out to pick up dog in a reasonable distance (700yds or less) but if he gets on out there farther it's nice to be able to extend your distance. Last Friday night our dogs got out of hearing because of strong wind & when the hunt was over I took my garmin out & extended the antenna and it showed him .9 of a mile treed. I have got as much as 2 miles with it extended but have heard others haven't gotten as much. Personally I think they are a good addition to the garmin. I paid $58. for mine but some are selling them now for $45. counting shipping.
