Has anyone ever had this problem, A female will make some milk, but not enough. She hasnt had the pups yet, but recieved a phone call from a previous owner who said that they gave her a hormone shot and that she raised more when they did this. I havent been able to get ahold of him to find out what it was. He was going to call his vet, but no luck. Has anyone ever had this problem or know what shot it might be.

MOST FEMALES DONT PRODUCE THAT MUCH MILK UNTIL THE PUPS ARE BORN. THEY WILL BAG UP SOME, BUT WILL REALLY BAG UP WHEN THEY GET HERE.

I know, but he lost a couple of litters then had 3 that she saved some, but they had to give her this shot. I dont know what it would be. Thank you for replying. Maybe Im to scared, but this is really the first litter ive had for myself. Im really nervous. LOL

I think I would just go ahead and call my vet with the information you have been given about her previous history with raising pups. Surely they should have some kind of idea of what shot you are talking about. Or possibly give you some things to do to help if she is not to far along.

When is she due?

Oxytocin, it helps with milk production and to clean out the female. It is a hormone.

The shot was likely oxytocin - it can be given to aid contractions, ensure all placentas are passed, and trigger milk let down.
You can get it from your vet, and it needs to be given when she is finished or almost finished delivering puppies - given too early it can cause puppy death.

Don't worry about the milk just yet. But do go to the vet so he/she can sell you some oxytocin and instruct you on it's proper use. It is not something you give before birth starts as it is a contraction aide. If you go more than an hour between pups, you can give it to get things going. It also helps them clean out when they are done. Can also be given to encourage the milk let down, all as has been stated already. It's also given after c-sections.

Some females won't have any milk at all until after the pups are born. And don't be surprised to see that in the first couple days that she doesn't have a lot, either since that is the time for colostrum, not milk.

Invest in a puppy scale (or baby scale that goes low enough for puppies or even a postal scale) and weigh your puppies at birth and 1-2 times per day to ensure they are gaining weight and to catch things early if they are not. I've had to supplement litters with bottle feeding before. Have what you need on hand just in case.

give her some baby goat milk replacer in her food, she will milk like a holstein.. oxytosin and antibiotic makes the come around a lot faster after whelping..

Thanks, It cost me a small fortune today. I have everything i need, except the baby goat milk replacer and the wife is getting it tommorow. I am hopeing for the best. Thanks for all the ideas, Im trying them all.
