It won`t smell as strong as a fresh or live coon.

ANOTHER THING TO REMEMBER IS A DEAD COON WILL ALSO BEGIN TO DECAY. AND ONCE IT IS FROZEN AND THEN UNTHAWED IT WILL DECAY AS WELL. SO THERE ARE ALSO BACTERIA THAT WILL PRODUCE SCENT THAT A LIVE COON WONT.

BUT THAT IS GOOD FOR MAKING DRAGS FOR YOUNG PUPS JUST THE SAME. JUST DONT BE SURPRISED IF THEY ACT DIFFERENT IF YOU'VE FOOLED ALOT WITH A FROZE COON/HIDE THAN THEY DO VS A FRESH COON/HIDE.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, BUT SOMETIMES THE COON CAN ALSO ABSORB SCENTS THAT ARE IN YOUR REFRIGERATOR/FREEZER.

WE FROZE SOME RAMPS ONE TIME AND HAD A COON HIDE NEXT TO IT, TRIPPLE WRAPPED IN TRASHBAGS. WHEN WE UNTHAWED IT IT SMELLED LIKE RAMPS. LOL. SINCE THAT INSTANCE, WE NOW HAVE A SMALL "HIDE/CRITTER" FREEZER AT MY PARENTS WHERE WE PUT ALL OUR COON HIDES, DEER HIDES, ANYTHING LIKE THAT. LOL.

Here's what I do.................

Put the hide in a paper bag then place in a plastic then freeze. Then take the hide and let it soak in hot water before you lay the drag. I also from time to time will let it soak in coon scent.

As long as you freeze it right away it won't get the dead smell to cover up the coon smell but it will still lose some of the coon smell. Y wouldn't you skin them out first? Doesn't that take up a lot of unnecessary room in your freezer? Skinning it out won't hurt the smell! Besides, they're a lot easier to skin out when they're still warm.
