Every dog I own is chipped. Our club chips for $25.00 per dog including lifetime enrollment in a national database.

Mine are all chipped - and I believe it is a yearly fee to keep them registered? I'd say it's worth the money tho, especially if you can get it done at a clinic (or like our SPCA does it for $15) - it's kinda hard to say a stolen dog is yours if someone else has the paperwork to match it's chip. I guess tattooing has the same effect

When I take my dogs to the vet he doesn't swipe them for a chip. So my question is how do you get your stolen dog back unless you have found him and just need the chip for "extra" ID.

A dog thief can see a tatoo and whoever buys the dog from the thief can see it too.

I gave a dog to some people in Dallas Texas. It ran away from home. The dog pound called me and told me they had my dog. I called the new owners and they had it back the same day. Not all scan but some do. Then like one said if you find a stolen dog you have proof and they don't even know it is there. If you raise and train a dog nobody can claim it as there own becouse you can prove it's yours with the commands. Hounds for the most part isn't trained with to many commands. So they are and easy mark for a thief. I am going to chip my pups and I don't think anyone could say they belonged to anybody else when I am done but it is the cheapest insurance you can get. Lie any insurance though it doesn't cover everything.

I have mine micro-chipped. It will help if local dog warden/catcher or pound gets the dog. Many local animal shelters have only a 72 hour keep policy which is a short time....the chip might make a difference.
The chip I have is a one time fee.

SCANNING

I've known our vets for more than 29 yrs. We're friends as well as a working relationship. EVERY new animal we get, no matter WHERE we SAY we got it gets scanned at their office. We chip all of ours. Ours are "just pets" but if we owned any we could hunt we'd chip them too... Not TOO expensive and may help ONE of ours to be returned...that would be worth tons to us....
You can purchase the materials to do it yourself. If we had many hounds I'd do it myself to save a few bucks... easy as giving shots.

Hope you ALL have NO times in the future where your own are lost...or stolen!

Happy Hunting Heather

Thanks for the answers ya'll but if my vet, my very good friend, went to swiping my dog, I'd ask him, Buddah, What the hell are you doing? Are you working for me or for the goverrnment? Or for the HSUS? If so, Take the 5 seconds you took to smell his breath and the other 5 seconds it took to sniff his ass off from the minuite it took to see if he had a chip and then send 90% of the bill to who knows and who gives a dam where.

A state granted license is one Hell of a thing, ennaso? Who do you really work for?
