Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

How many of you have ever dealt with this in your dogs? My year old Walker stayed out in the pen while I was gone to the World last weekend, and Saturday night when we got home I noticed his paws were beginning to swell, were red, and he was licking them excessively. By the next morning he was extremely ill-irregular breathing, HUGE swollen paws, and the skin on the insides of his legs/under his belly was abnormally red. He was also coughing and vomiting. Took him to the emergency vet, and he ordered a tick profile, gave me some antibiotics, and sent us on our way. The dog was extremely sick until about Tuesday. He began to perk up then, and has improved every day since. Today he is actually close to being normal again, though he still isn't as energetic as usual.

The funny thing to me is on Monday I noticed my other male Walker beginning to lick his paws. Both of them would kick their legs out and flop down licking their paws, almost as if they were in pain. Sure enough, the next day this dog was beginning to cough and hack, though I haven't seen him actually vomit yet. His legs and feet have swollen as well, but he didn't go down like my pup....still has a good appetite and semi-normal energy level.

The vet called yesterday to tell me the test came back positive for Rocky Mtn on my pup. Not saying I doubt the bloodwork, but it seems awfully coincidental that both dogs have come down with similar symptoms right around the same time, since around here I believe Rocky Mtn is somewhat rare. Both dogs have one common factor-they both ate Purina Moist N' Meaty last Friday and Saturday. I don't generally feed my dogs anything like that, but the older Walker won't always finish his Pro-Plan or hold weight without a little extra and I ended up giving them both some of the Moist N' Meaty while they were in the house Friday. Could this possibly be a food allergy, or a reaction to something toxic in the food? This is the first time I've experienced something like this in a hound. Sorry for the extremely long post, but wanted to hear some of your experiences/opinions as well.

Caused by Ticks in People and Dogs

Rocky Mountain spotted fever
Overview
Rocky Mountain spotted fever is an infectious disease caused by bacteria carried by ticks.

Symptoms
Symptoms usually develop about 2 to 14 days after the tick bite. They may include:

Chills
Fever
Severe headache
Muscle pain
Mental confusion
Rash -- usually starts a few days after the fever; first appears on wrists and ankles, then spreads to most of the body; some people do not get a rash
Additional symptoms that may be associated with this disease:

Abnormal sensitivity to light
Diarrhea
Excessive thirst
Hallucinations
Loss of appetite
Nausea
Vomiting

Treatment
Treatment involves careful removal of the tick from the skin and antibiotics to eliminate the infection. Doxycycline or tetracycline are frequently used. Chloramphenicol may be used in pregnant women.

Note: Tetracycline and doxycycline pills are usually not prescribed for children until after all the permanent teeth have come in. These medicines can permanently discolor teeth that are still forming. For this disease, it may be used for short periods of time when it is felt that the benefits outweigh the risks.

Causes
Rocky Mountain spotted fever is caused by Rickettsia rickettsii (R. Rickettsii), which is carried by ticks. The bacteria spreads to humans through a tick bite.

In the western United States, the bacteria is carried by the wood tick, and in the eastern U.S. it is carried by the dog tick. However, other ticks spread the infection in the southern U.S. and in Central and South America.

Contrary to the name "Rocky Mountain," most recent cases have been reported in the eastern United States, including North and South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. Most cases occur in the spring and summer with about 1,000 cases reported per year. Most of the reported cases have been in children.

Risk factors include recent hiking or exposure to ticks in an area where the disease is known to occur.

Tests & diagnosis
Tests that may be done include:

Antibody titer by complement fixation or immunofluorescence
Kidney function tests
Platelet count
Partial thromboplastin time (PTT)
Prothrombin time (PT)
Red blood cell count
Skin biopsy taken from the rash to check for R. rickettsii
Urinalysis to check for blood in the urine and protein in the urine

Prognosis
Treatment usually cures the infection. Complications are rare but can include paralysis, hearing loss, nerve damage, and, rarely, death.

Prevention
When walking or hiking in tick-infested areas, tuck long pants into socks to protect the legs, and wear shoes and long-sleeved shirts. Ticks will show up on white or light colors better than dark colors, making them easier to remove from clothing.

Remove ticks immediately by using a tweezers, pulling carefully and steadily. Insect repellent may be helpful. Because less than 1% of ticks carry this infection, antibiotics are not usually given after a tick bite if there is no evidence of disease.

Note:
People get this disease when they are bitten by a tick that is carrying the bacterium R. rickettsia. Because ticks on dogs can be infected with R. rickettsii, dogs and people can get Rocky Mountain spotted fever from the same ticks. These ticks can also bite other animals and pass Rocky Mountain spotted fever to them. When you remove ticks from any animal, the crushed tick or its parts can also pass this disease through any cuts or scrapes on your skin.

JESS,

DID YOU FIND A TICK ON EITHER ONE OF THE HOUNDS?

MY OLDEST SON HAD THIS WHEN HE WAS 10 (HE IS NOW 22) IT HAS DEVELOPED INTO LUPUS. HE CAN NOT GET HOT, EVEN TODAY. IF HE IS OUTSIDE IN THE HEAT TOO LONG, HE WILL BECOME SICK. IF HE OVER HEATS, HE WILL GET A TERRIBLE HEAD ACHE.
THIS WILL NEVER GO AWAY AND HE WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE SYMPTOMS FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE.

I FOUND THE TICK ON HIM 2 DAYS BEFORE HE INITIALLY GOT SICK.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU. I HOPE YOUR BOYS GET TO FEELING BETTER VERY SOON!

Two years ago, during the heat of the World/AO competitions, I hac Loose treated for Rocky Mountian Spotted Fever and Erlicia.

Even after 2 months of Doxy and Tetracycline, he still tested positive.

I was givin the name of a med to use from a med supply dealer, Imasol.

We used it and finaly got a neg test.

His mouth and drive have never quite been the same since. Which is why we stopped competing him in major events. He is however still sound to breed, and I hunt him at home from time to time.

It took the absolute BEST hound Ive ever unsnapped, and left him a shell of what once was.

Im not sure what was worse. The disease or the cure.

Thanks for the information. Cleo, I haven't found any ticks on either of them recently. None on Junior since he's been here the past couple months, and the last time I found one on Waylon was a month ago or so. He doesn't get many since he stays inside the majority of the time.

Thankfully Waylon has improved a TON since Sunday, and is close to his normal self. He tires out more easily of course, but his energy level is back up, he's eating, and the swelling has almost gone away. Junior's legs and feet are a bit swollen, but other than that he isn't acting any different. The vet is having me give them both doxycycline for about 3 weeks. Hoping that will be all it takes to treat it. The pup is one of my most promising dogs hunting-wise, and is my best buddy. This week has been extremely taxing on me, to say the least!
