Must read and reply

Okay im going to bring up a subject that has not been covered on here.

CELL PHONES:

Im going to start by an example; I use my cell phone to run the hunt times. It has a countdown and a stop watch on it and it's very handy.

How many of you think that if youre seen with youre cell phone you should be scratched?

I was in a hunt 3 weeks ago and my dog was split treed 150 yards left handed of the other 3 and i took 1 of the guys spectator with me to handle my dog and when i got to the tree i looked at my phone to see what time it was. Those guys came to me after handling there dogs and i told the judge i was going to pill my dog off the tree before shinning. He then told me i was scratched for having my cell phone. I busted out laughing and told him to put a question on the card. I told him his spectator had ZERO say in the cast on any givin situation and that he was waisting everyones time making us all go back to the club house. I then added that i could have my cell phone on and play games on it or run the times on it (which i do every cast im on)

What do you guys think?

I don't think you are allowed to talk on a cell phone during a cast but I have used mine to look at the time.

Ya I don't think you can call on it. You don't need to your ear to check the time. Right. Your good. How did it turn out?

i would say having the cell out is inviting the troubles that you are incurring, but under the master of hounds guidekines, it says you can not call questions, and you can not use it to contact other cast. it really says nothing of the time keeping part, but then with all the new phones being able to text etc....i would think it would be a lot easier to explain looking at a $10.00 wal-mart stop watch than it would be a phone. With that in mind, the new GPS trackers have a walk back capability too, but you better not have it out during the hunt, unless you are on a time out. As an MOH, i would say you are walking a very thin line on this issue. Before i would use it again, i think i would get some clarification from Allen G. Yes it is an interputation thing on the judges part, but i would not leave it to chance. chance may find you barred if you are not very careful here...jmo by the way, i think common sense would say you haven't called anyone, that is, if you stayed with the cast, they would have heard you talking. text messaging could be a cat of different color.

After i shined the tree i asked him if he was ready to go back to the clubhouse and he said no im not going to scratch you im just going to warn you. I said no you already scratched me !! Were going to go all the way back to the clubhouse !! They all 3 refused to see my coon and i was heated. I told him he could warn me all he wanted but i could have my phone out as long as i wasn't texting or calling on it.

This whole cell phone needs to be clarified by UKC. Last year i was at an RQE and one of the casts scratched the cast leader with 10 mins left for looking at the time on his phone and he questioned it and the MOH held up the scratch. That is not right!!

In order to scratch for cell phone usage it MUST BE PROVEN THAT YOU WERE CONVERSING WITH OTHER CASTS REFERING TO SCORES. UKC needs to make it clear so this crap stops. I have been warned countless times for using it to run times and i have seen numerous people scratched for it. It's usually a loop hole guys try to use to get the leader out of the ball game.

I agree. Cell phones are helpful and useful during a hunt. Unless you used it to convey scores I don't know how you could be scratched.
Last weekend I guided for a club where I don't have any spots. A club member and I went for an hour drive, and he showed me 6 good spots. I took notes, made a map on gps and was able to guide. I did need a cell phone though just in case we had any challenges with landowners etc.
On the second nite of hunt we had a guide who put us in a 3 mile by 4 mile section. My phone had no reception there, so guide sent his phone while he and his wife waited [with her phone]at the truck. He wanted us to be able to call though, in case of emergency. If I called him on time out to ask for directions out of the section- could I have been scratched? That seems wrong.

i read somewhere that many people have stopped wearing watches because they've come to rely upon their cellphone for the time.

I have been on casts where we exchange cell numbers during a timeout when we have to split up to retrive dogs. didnt think this was against the rules as long as your not calling other casts. Not much sense in making unenforceable rules anyway when everyone is in there trucks between drops.

I am one of those people. I haven't worn a watch in years because I always have my cellphone in my pocket.

I can see using a cell phone for time, or having it with you in case of emergency, but answering calls, text messaging, etc, is too much for me. I'm there to hunt, and enjoy hunting, not constantly have someones phone light up and hear them giggle while they text their girlfriend from the hunt.

UKC has made it VERY plain that cell phone use on a cast is permisible as long as scores ARE NOT discussed. They even said that calling between cast is permisible to discuss where each has turned out and where they plan to turn out next. This is often needed when two guides are hunting in the same vicinity.

This has been in the Advisor column.

People need to read the rules. I can talk on my phone all night long if i want and there is nothing you can do about so long as i am not talking scores. Had a guy try one night we were hunting in severe weather and i had a buddy call me if there were tornados in the area this poor guy thought he was going to get me scratched. I have also talked with another cast when moving to a new spot to make sure we don't run into each other. But i have never talked score.

go to Wal-Mart.......

and buy a 12 $ stop watch....... one of these days ur going to get scratched when it really counts........ may not matter if ur behind in points, but what if it cost u a 1st place win....

it's a lot easier to avoid a scratch than it is to get one overturned....

ok first of all this has came up many times and it always goes to the same thing..... ukc CAN NOT tell you that you cannot use your cell phones. the rules state that NO SCORES CAN BE DISCUSSED BETWEEN CASTS. i own my own business and i have a family , if i get a call while on a hunt i have 2 options, answer it or not. a judge cant scratch me for my phone they dont pay the bill i do. people talk on here about getting scratched for having phones in the woods, and i know that there are people who judge and try to use having a cell phone as a way to get someone scratched, all that will do is get your name put on the HE CANT JUDGE BECAUSE HE DONT KNOW THE RULES list.
in my opinion i wish more people would take thier phones to the woods, that way less people would get lost when you call time out and the dogs are split to the 4 corners of the county......mike

mike is right you can talk on it the whole hunt if you wish and talk to other cast as long as you do not talk scores [per ukc rules] funny thing is they have dog trackers out for your phones. they are pricey and not many have them but there out there no ukc rules on them.......

POst by Claytonwalkers said "they all 3 refused to see my coon.

So how are you so certain that there was "your" coon up there to see? I've used my cellphone light to find my keys. I've used my Bic lighter to find coon eyes. What's UkC rules on shining on a split tree before the cast arrives? Is a gas burning lighter more or less of an "artificial light" than a battery powered cell phone? If you're half as good of a coon finder as me, I'll find a coon in a quarter moon, a Bic lighter, and if one's looking and my old eyes have adjusted, I'm sure I'll find him with my cell phone light.

I think the man from Georgia was right. You might be the type to press the limits

I would love to see someone try to even warn me for having my cell phone out!! I can do whatever i want on it as long as im not calling or texting the other casts in reference to scores. It amazes me to see someone try to scratch someone for having a cell phone out. Try to scratch me for it and i will write you up you can count on that. Obviously if someone wanted to talk scores with other casts it's very easy and nothing can be done about it unfortunatley unless you can prove it which is nearley impossible to do. You guys that say you can warn or scratch somebody for having a cell phone are flat out WRONG stopwatches are annoying having to always have batteries and remembering to bring it all the time.

cheaters.......

r going to cheat........ if u r not receiving a call, u don't have any business w/ ur phone out of ur pocket..... if u can't stay off the phone for 2 hrs a night, STAY HOME......

it is very easy & simple to text scores to another cast......
before the hunt: have text messages assigned to a soft key and clear all resent text receipts (except ur buddy)

during the hunt:
1: go under the guise "I'm using the stop watch on my phone."
2: press assigned soft key three times
3: type in score and hit send

how long does it take? as long as it takes u to press one key three times, enter ur score and hit send.......

I tried it... from the time I opened my phone until the time I closed it was 12 seconds..... I'd say if the cheaters practice, they can prolly get it down to 6 or 7 seconds.......
