Wisconsin Coon hunting during deer season

Quote from
DATE: September 4, 2009
TO: Natural Resources Board
FROM: Matthew J. Frank

"Raccoon hunting
Raccoon hunting at night would be open during all firearm seasons, except for the opening weekend of the November gun season."

Okay Folks just in today. I cut this out of a note from the Secretary of the DNR to the DNR Board.
If you want to read the whole proposed plan for the 16day deer season drop me a line.

The bottom line for us coon hunters is; we not only saved loosing time during the new 16 day deer season, we gained back time we lost many years ago.

So thank you to all those that took the time to fill out that survey
and let them know that coon hunters do care enought to get involved.

If you can drop an email to the Secretary, and say--------

"Just another coon hunter saying thanks"

Dave, I think we stay open through the whole season in the CWD area just like the last years.

Now, about that right too retrieve law...

some answers

Okay here is what we have now.

We can run our hounds "at night" for during any gun deer season
except the "normal" 9 day season. that includes all the CWD season, the youth hunt weekend, any "spiecial" seasons, anterless seasons and the muzzle loader season. We can also run thru all of the metro 23 day seasons.

Remember though that we need to wear orange like all small game hunting untill 1/2 our after sunset and 1/2 hour before sunrise.

The news I've posted is only a plan that is proposed by the DNR and the Natural Resourses Board. The "plan" for a 16 day gun deer season needs to go out to public hearings yet (see below for proposed locations) before it's active. Sorry it won't be this year, so don't jump the gun.

Hearing, No dates as yet

"Public hearings
We anticipate holding eight public hearings throughout the state to collect opinion and comments on these proposed changes. Suggested hearing locations are: Park Falls, Eau Claire, LaCrosse, Stevens Point, Green Bay, Madison, Waukesha, Spooner, and Rhinelander."

"The right to retrive" is still being worked on and not forgotten lets work on that for next years spring hearings.

Know what kills me is that farmers or land owners well deny a coon hunter promission to hunt their land during deer season thinking are dogs well scare them off which every land owner has that right. But a few years back i took some of these non-believers out on a hunt and proved to them that if you got a good coon dog he's not going to bother them long legged car wrecking pieces of i;m not going to get mad. Any ways after about 3 hours of watching deer get up and move 20 feet and lay back down while the dogs were treeing coon all around them they began to become firm believers. I don't know how it is up there but when deer season hits here i lose 2 solid weeks of coon hunting to just this. Don't do no good to go to public ground cause its been hit hard by everyone else that faces the same problem. I just wish a some of these guys would get more educated on what coon hunting is and how it effects and doesn't effected deer hunting. I know some of the biggest deer around here were shot the next morning after that area was coon hunted that night. Oh well congrats to your accompishment on getting yours changed.

Yes you are right once a deer hunter gets out and see's what we all have seen so many times they become believers.

How this all started here in Wisconsin had nothing about hounds chasing deer, it was to control deer hunters hunting after closing hours.

Back about 30 + years ago wardens would find a "deer hunter" with his 30-06 or 30-30 in the woods after hours, the poacher would claim he guit hunting deer and was now hunting coon.So the wardens were unable to inforce the hunting hours for deer.

Their answer was to close coon hunting "at night" with the rationale that it was not closing all coon hunting, just at night.
When we started to fight this we were told that the DNR did not want the wardens going out on calls after lights shinning in the woods only to find someone doing something "legal".

Then came all the new seasons to control the growing deer herd.
If we had not fought this for all these years we would not be hunting coon for better than a month during prime time, coon hunting.

So the point is "Never give up and never think that the fight is over."
