I was talking to an old coonhunter a while back and he swore that if you treed on a den tree. The dogs was running backtrack. Its possible. So whats the answer....

Hunt early in the morning and I doubt most of the dens you tree are backtracks.


Same thing goes in the winter.

So is he saying that treeing in a den is impossible unless the dogs have ran the back track?
I know treeing in den trees happens because I have done it and know on a couple occasions the coon or coons were in there.
Treed in one den tree and while a friend pecked on the tree with a large stick I was shining a large hole about 15-20 feet up on the side of the tree and saw two coons travel up past the hole. They did not come out but plainly went past the hole on up in the tree.
Treed in another one time and the dog went absolutely crazy while at the tree. When I got there I could see why.
The hole was at the bottom of the tree and big enough to get my head in and I shined up inside the tree.At about 6-8 feet was the coons rear end and tail plainly visible.

Yeah, I think you all are right. I have never personally had this problem but i think that the guy who told me this should seriously consider looking for a new dog.

I've seen more than enough coon in den trees to give my dogs the benifit of the doubt no matter when they make a den.


Does it happen? Yes it does, but I bet it's not near as often as most would have you think.

Find you a piece of Bambo or a good Briar limb and poke it up in there and twist around a bit and you will find out pretty soon if theres a coon there pulled a few out that way in my life time

Around here where all the timber has been cut beach trees are the largest trees left in many of the places I hunt. Anyone who knows about beach trees knows that like 99% of them are hollow and coons will get in them whether they are a den or not. I've personally had nights where I make four or five den trees in a night and find coons in all of them. For this reason I dont get on my dog when he makes two or three dens in a row, it just happens around here sometimes.

I've seen my female walk over to a hollow beach with an opening at the bottom several times and stick her head back in and then just fall treed and when I check it it will have a coon in it.

If you run the same coon or area a few times "They learn real Quick the track their going to run Back to the Den"
