Now This Will Put Some Hurt On Your Hound !!!!

Road running the hounds early this morning to beat the heat. Came around the corner and WOW!

Didn't expext to see this !

I had the Tri-Tronics on the hound. That made the differnce between a good Sunday morning and a not so good Sunday morning.

Made for a real good " Structured" training session.

Hi Rich,

Porcupine or as some call it a quill pig

Hate Them Things !!

Hi rich 40's,

You sure are right !!!

A tangle with one of these makes for a unhappy hound and a PIA for the owner. PULLING QUILLS S$$$s .! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had a hound some years ago that had more desire to bite into a porkie than the pain to remove quills. Unusual combination

Today's training technology sure assists with these types of issues.

quill removal

Here's a tip from an Outdoor Life a few years ago......

I have been fortunate enough not to have to try it, so can't say yay or nay .......

Pour a few spoonfuls of vinegar on the quills where they enter the dogs skin.
Wait 5 to 10 minutes and repeat. A few minutes after the second application of
vinegar, pour mineral oil of the quills. The acidic vinegar removes the lime from
the quills and they soften. After you apply the oil, the quills will pop out much more
easily, sometimes with little or no effort.

We've had a pile of them the last couple of years luckily I've had straight enough dogs that don't mess with them. I'm working a couple of young dogs so this year things could be a little different, lol.

Are you going to Swansey next weekend? I'm really trying to "rally the troops" and get people there, the club has gone through alot of changes, they could really use the support.

Hope to see you there, wd.

Yeah I've heard alot of things and everyone's story is told a little bit differently.

When I showed up at the youth event to donate dogfood and there were no kids there I knew it was bad.

I'm not one to get wrapped up in all the drama, could care less who does what and when, but I'm telling you if something isn't done to turn some of these clubs around, they'll be gone for good.

I'm open to suggestions and will help any club any way I can. I'm just a small time guy, usually have a coondog at the end of my leash, trying to keep the sport alive! wd

Wayne,I'll tell my side,I told the club I could get a deal on some lights for a raffle,I said I could get three lights,Ranucci said he would pay for one,I would pay for one,and the club would pay for one, well Ranucci picked up one of the lights and when they barred him he wouldn't give up the light which he payed for,I gave Charlie Burrel a new Blazer light, that I payed for Bob Nolette won the other light and nobody from the club ever gave me any money for the third light, the club said I was going to donate all three lights that was never the agreement so they barred me

The main thing is we need to fix whatever is broke. Doesn't matter who said what, did what, owes what or whatever. New England clubs in general are falling by the way-side and if somethings not done, they'll all be gone. The clubs are far and few between as it is, the more we lose...the more we lose! wd

Jim, sorry for taking over your "porky" post! wd

Yes it can make for a very long nite lol. A training pen i worked for here a while back we had a porky crawl down inside the pen with pups talk bout a day of pulling quills one the young dogs had to be take to the vet there was so many. Poor dog looked like it had a white beard. Winter time is usally a good time to spot and shoot them things they leave a trail i the snow that a blind man could follow.

I dont mind porkies too much, my dogs dont mess with them anymore. Sure is a pain when they do though. I have a young dog here that'll probably go through a pulling session soon, or two. Thats dogin in NH for ya.

Wayne if ya need a hand with the clubs let me know, I'm willing to help where I can.

Had a few "game-getters" years ago that I couldn't break off of porkies, would come back to the truck looking like Santa Claus they were so full of quills. Spent more time pulling quills and in wrestling matches with hounds then I did treeing coon, they didn't last long around here.

It's just a matter of getting people to show up. Even if they are just there to watch some of the events, throw a dog on the bench to support the club no matter who's judging, help a youth, eat a burger and have a drink, it all helps.
If we all try and make one more event more than we did last year, it helps.
All we can do is to try and improve and fix what looks to be broke, I don't have the answers, only trying to help. wd

Sorry again Jim. wd
