Question- Yellow Jackets

Last night we hunted two younger dogs together...they started to tree, but then would just cut off. We figured they weren't totally confident on the tree and decided to wait and see if they'd lock down. After 10 minutes of the same thing we went in to them.

Unfortunitly when we got to the tree we realized very quickly why they'd been acting afool.

The dogs were covered in yellow jackets (a nest at the base of the tree). What we thought was them coming off the tree was probably them fighting the yellow jackets off.

The male dog within 10 minutes of getting him back to the truck wouldn't walk and could barely keep his balance. The female that hadn't locked down as good was better but not by much.

We found a mud hole and basically laid them down in the water and tried to wash/cool them off as much as possible. Once home we gave them benedryl (not sure of the spelling).

The female is doing OK and the male is much better but still pretty swollen on the shoulders and just layin around.

Two questions...is there something different we could have done differently and can a dog take an eppie pen? I have a friend that carries one of those pens, but I wonder if a dog can stand it.

I would guess another 5 minutes and we'd have lost the male.

Yellow Jackets

Sounds like you did all you could.

Thats a fear of mine too. The yellow jackets have been bad this year with all the rain. And there hard to kill.

I had a 3 month old pup get stung several times during the day. I gave her benedryl. She laid around for several days and was very jumpy when she heard bees or anything flying insects. But she's ok now. She even went to the World hunt as a 7 month old and won her cast.

Sounds like you did what you could, not sure if they can take an eppi, but you may want to keep a bottle of benydryl in the truck.

This is why i dont hunt alone this time of year, deathly alergic my self, when i was 3 got into a mess of them in the back yard covered the inside of my pants stung over 200 times, they are the only bee i am alergic to, if i cant make it out guess thats were i will be found.
